Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team. We are seeking a motivated and skilled Research Imaging Technician (Clinical Research Practitioner) with experience in both clinical research and ophthalmic imaging to join our Research & Development team. The post holder will provide high-quality clinical and research care to participants across a diverse portfolio of research studies, supporting the safe and effective delivery of research that improves patient outcomes and advances healthcare innovation.

A key aspect of this role is supporting ophthalmic imaging and clinical research study delivery. We are particularly seeking an individual with research imaging experience who can contribute to the high-quality acquisition and management of imaging data across research studies. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain competency across relevant imaging modalities and equipment, ensuring imaging activities are delivered to the highest standards and in accordance with study-specific requirements. They will also contribute to equipment management, quality assurance processes, and the training and support of colleagues within the wider research team.

Working within a multidisciplinary research environment, the post holder will lead and assist in the coordination, management, and implementation of a range of clinical research studies, including complex commercial and non-commercial trials. Responsibilities include supporting participant recruitment and follow-up, undertaking study-related clinical procedures, maintaining accurate research documentation and data, and ensuring compliance with study protocols, ICH-GCP standards, and research governance requirements.

The post holder will have a direct impact on the successful delivery of research by ensuring participant safety, wellbeing, and experience remain at the heart of all study activities. By supporting study recruitment, data quality, protocol compliance, and imaging excellence, they will help generate evidence that improves patient care and supports the Trust's commitment to research and innovation.

Reporting to the Senior Team Leader/Research Sister/Charge Nurse, the post holder will work closely with R&D Matrons, Principal Investigators, the Clinical Lead Educator, Quality Assurance Lead, research study monitors, pharmacy teams, and clinical and academic colleagues across University Hospital Southampton and the University of Southampton. The role requires effective collaboration across multiple specialities and may include supporting outreach research activities within other clinical areas and community settings to ensure the delivery of a flexible, responsive, and high-quality research service.

Lead and support the delivery of research imaging by ensuring imaging procedures are performed to the highest quality standards, maintaining compliance with protocol requirements, equipment validation processes, and relevant quality assurance frameworks.

Provide specialist clinical and research care to participants involved in a diverse portfolio of clinical research studies, ensuring patient safety, wellbeing, and experience remain central to all research activity.

Coordinate and deliver research studies in accordance with study protocols, ICH-GCP, and Trust policies, including participant recruitment, consent (where delegated), data collection, study documentation, and follow-up.

Work collaboratively with Principal Investigators, research teams, clinical services, and external study sponsors to ensure the successful delivery of research studies, while promoting research and innovation across the organisation.

What Experience/Skills Are Needed

Significant experience in research imaging and delivery of clinical trials with competency across imaging modalities and equipment, imaging equipment certifications, quality assurance, and protocol compliance.

Demonstrable experience in clinical research delivery, including study coordination, participant management, data collection, and adherence to research governance requirements.

Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, research participants, sponsors, and external stakeholders.

Ability to manage competing priorities, work independently, and maintain accurate research records while ensuring high standards of patient care and research integrity.

Additional Information

The role includes responsibility for supporting imaging equipment management, including quality assurance, maintenance coordination, and contributing to the training and development of colleagues in research imaging practices.

The role may require flexible working, including providing cover across teams, outreach research activities, and participation in a service operating seven days a week where required.

The successful candidate must be able to travel between sites and community settings to support research delivery and participant visits.

The post holder will be expected to maintain mandatory training, professional registration (where applicable), and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) compliance.

Qualifications / Training Required

• Degree/Level 6 NVQ in Life, Physiological or Physical Sciences or related field or able to demonstrate clearly equivalent level of theoretical and practical knowledge
• Evidence of on-going professional development

Desirable criteria

• Specialist qualification/Graduate/registration
• International Conference on Harmonisation/Good Clinical Practice (ICH/GCP) Certification
• Venesection and cannulation

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria

• Significant clinical experience, working face to face with patients, in a relevant speciality with proven ability and competence to undertake a range of clinical tasks, including but not limited to, vital signs, body measurements, personal care.
