Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Psychologist to work with children and young people in the paediatric oncology service at the Great North Children's Hospital. This role is part of the wider Psychology in Healthcare Service, which provides psychological support to adult, children, and neuropsychology patients.

The post holder will be based in the Paediatric Psychology Service at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle Upon Tyne. The successful candidate will deliver evidence-based interventions to children, young people, and their families under the regional Paediatric Oncology Service. We offer a supportive team environment with close multidisciplinary team (MDT) working relationships and managerial support.

Essential Requirements

• A Doctorate in Clinical Psychology
• Training in psychopathology models, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, psychological therapies, and lifespan developmental psychology, accredited by the British Psychological Society
• HCPC registration
• Doctorate-level knowledge of research methodology, design, and complex data analysis within clinical psychology
• Experience in specialist psychological assessment, formulation, and treatment across various care settings
• Experience working with diverse client groups across the lifespan with varying clinical severity
• Interest in working in a medical setting with children and young people with health conditions

Additional Information

Our staff oversee over 6,500 patient contacts daily across multiple sites, including Freeman Hospital, RVI, and others, delivering high standards of healthcare and pioneering clinical practices supported by state-of-the-art diagnostics.

We support the development of psychologists through postgraduate training and CPD opportunities, with regular supervision and service development contributions. The service provides training for the local DClinPsych course.

Role Responsibilities

• Provide specialist psychological assessments, formulation, and therapy within paediatric oncology
• Maintain an individual caseload across clinical severity levels
• Work professionally with distressed patients and families, considering barriers such as language and social deprivation
• Conduct triage and clinical decision-making for referrals
• Participate in MDT meetings and communicate complex information effectively
• Manage workload independently across outpatient and community settings
• Contribute to service development, quality improvement, teaching, and research activities

The role is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, serving patients from the North East and North Cumbria, with services delivered face-to-face or via telehealth.
