Main duties of the job

We are seeking a part time (0.8wte) Clinical Psychologist for a period of 12 months to provide psychological input to Paediatric Oncology and Haematology and the General Paediatrics services within Southampton Children's Hospital.

We are welcoming applications from Trainee Clinical Psychologists who will shortly be qualifying from the doctoral programmes, and who would like to start work in a large and supportive department of 25+ psychologists.

You will work alongside other psychologists and the wider psychosocial team to provide psychological advice support and consultation, working directly with children and families and indirectly with staff in the hospital and across our network. Within the General Paediatrics service your role will include offering in- and outpatient assessments and interventions, as well we providing advice and consultation to the wider team and liaison with other local services. We are looking for candidates who have experience of working with children and families in a paediatric setting and enthusiasm for collaborative working.

  • Experience of assessing and working with children and young people with a whole range of emotional and behavioural difficulties and their families/carers, presenting with the full range of clinical severity across a range of settings including outpatient, community, educational and residential.
  • Experience of working in an acute paediatric setting and/or experience of working with children and families experiencing issues related to loss, bereavement, long term medical needs, severe illness or injury.
  • Experience of providing psychological management for children and young people who find it difficult to comply with medical procedures or regimens.
  • Experience of carrying out neuropsychological assessments with children and young people.
Desirable

  • Further post-doctoral training in the psychological assessment and treatment of children and young people with acute and chronic illnesses and life-limiting conditions, acquired through structured clinical supervision, self-study and attendance at relevant courses. Training in restraint, e.g. SCIP
