Aneurin Bevan University Health Board supports flexible working.

There is a temporary top-up for Bands 2 and 3 to reflect the incorporation of the top-up to the living wage of £12.60 per hour (£24,638 per annum). This top-up will be in place until the 2025/26 pay uplift is confirmed.

Job Overview

We have an opportunity for a Clinical/Practitioner Psychologist to join the CONNECT Children’s Weight Management Service. The post is Band 8a, but we invite less experienced applicants to apply, with a plan to develop into the 8a role. We seek a compassionate psychologist to support children and young people living with obesity, working closely with the wider team and maintaining links with the child psychology team within the Paediatric Psychology Service.

Responsibilities include providing psychological assessments, individual and group interventions, developing personalized plans, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to address psychological, emotional, relational, and behavioral factors contributing to obesity.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for supporting young people and their families, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to empowering patients.

Main duties
  • Provide psychological services to children and young people with obesity and their families, including face-to-face and virtual work, assessments, and therapeutic interventions.
  • Provide teaching, training, and supervision; conduct research and audits; develop and evaluate new psychological programs.
  • Contribute to service development and participate in professional activities.
  • Gain experience of professional issues and current NHS strategic thinking related to weight management for children and young people.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered with the HCPC as a qualified Clinical Psychologist.
  • Honours degree in Psychology, eligible for Graduate membership of BPS.
  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent, eligible for membership of the Division of Clinical Psychology of BPS.

Experience

Essential

  • Three-year Doctorate training including work with children.
  • Post-qualification experience working with children with chronic health conditions and their families.
  • At least 10 training days per year relevant to children with physical health problems.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate experience in a relevant clinical setting.
  • Significant experience in Child Psychology working with children with chronic health conditions.
