Job summary

Delivering world-class cancer research is at the heart of what we do at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. An exciting opportunity for a Clinical Educator for Research has arisen to cover maternity leave to support us in this aim.

A Clinical Educator for Research role was developed to work with the Senior Practice Education Facilitator (SPEF) on the implementation of a high-quality education and training provision within the Research and Innovation (R&I) division.

The successful candidate, supported by the SPEF and the R&I division, will be responsible for supporting the planning and implementation of induction, education, and continuing professional development for staff across the R & I Division. The post holder will be based on the CRF and be responsible for coordinating and delivering clinical competencies and training for clinical staff from across the R&I Division.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a proactive individual to join our expanding team supporting education within the R&I division. The post holder will develop as a specialist in education and practice development, supporting individuals to meet divisional and trust objectives, enhancing clinical workforce performance, and ensuring continuous improvement for excellence across the division. The role involves supporting high-quality, evidence-based patient care with a focus on excellent patient experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Main Duties

  • Work with the Senior Nursing Team and SPEF on clinical staff development, including competency assessments.
  • Identify strategies for practice development and support structures to promote best practice.
  • Promote research/evidence-based practice in the clinical setting.
  • Facilitate professional and educational development, acting as a resource.
  • Act as a role model and develop competency-based practices.
  • Liaise with external educational organizations to support learning strategies.
  • Implement practice change/improvement systems following incident action plans.
  • Perform ad-hoc duties as directed by line managers.
Clinical
  • Spend 80% of time supporting clinical staff, facilitating reflective practice, and providing day-to-day support.
  • Serve as a clinical expert, ensuring delivery of evidence-based nursing care for patients in clinical trials.
  • Ensure all nursing practice aligns with NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain competence in clinical skills such as venepuncture, cannulation, IV administration, and use of CVADs/TIVADs.
  • Provide expert advice on research and oncology nursing.
Managerial
  • Manage time effectively to meet service goals.
  • Update and manage training databases in collaboration with the senior PEF.
  • Provide regular feedback to the SPEF, Nursing Team, and Matron.
  • Advise on the development of SACT services.
Professional
  • Maintain professionalism and adhere to trust policies and standards.
  • Participate in appraisal, development, and training activities.
  • Ensure ongoing professional development and revalidation.
  • Support nursing practice audits and evaluations.
Clinical Governance
  • Create a positive learning environment for all staff levels.
  • Develop and deliver teaching programs, including presentations.
  • Contribute to policy, standard, and guideline development, including SOPs.
  • Support staff in their continuing education and resource access.
  • Undertake annual audits of education and clinical practice, adapting to practice changes.
Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: NMC Registered Nurse, UKONS SACT Passport or equivalent, and a formal teaching/education qualification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Desirable: Oncology-specific qualifications, SACT Passport assessor, Clinical skills assessor.

Experience

  • Essential: Experience in research, oncology, or haematology, including managing unwell patients; teaching and assessing learners; minimum 12 months of SACT delivery; clinical research experience; proficient in clinical skills like venepuncture, cannulation, IV administration, CVADs/TIVADs.
  • Desirable: Leadership training, managing incidents and complaints, coordinating patient care, delivering training such as SACT administration.

Skills

  • Essential: Administration of IV SACT, haematology/oncology skills, excellent clinical and communication skills, team motivation, problem-solving, high standards of care, computer literacy, cross-team working, autonomous and team work, interpersonal skills.
  • Desirable: Teaching and preceptorship skills.

Knowledge

  • Essential: Specialist knowledge of SACT, current issues in oncology nursing, resource management, safety, risk, quality, and diversity awareness.
  • Desirable: Learner needs, best practices in SACT, audit and research methodologies, presentation skills.
