Job summary

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) invites applications for a Band 6 Clinical Physiologist to deliver high-quality video-EEG telemetry studies within the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

You will interpret results, prepare reports, present findings at MDTs, participate in research and training, and contribute to audits and service development.

Qualifications

• BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology (Neurophysiology) or equivalent.
• IRCP Part I or equivalent.
• Postgraduate qualification e.g. STP in neurophysiology or equivalent experience.
• Member of Professional Organisation.

Responsibilities

• Provide a highly complex, specialist Clinical Neurophysiology service.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 6 Clinical Physiologist on the Sir Jules Thorn Telemetry Unit at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. As a Clinical Physiologist you will be responsible for providing high quality Video-EEG Telemetry studies for service users within the Epilepsy surgery program and neurological sleep services.

Our telemetry team provide the full range of video EEG services including:

• Diagnostic studies
• Pre-surgical studies including ictal SPECT
• Invasive studies (with depth (SEEG) electrodes)
• Polysomnography, MSLT and Actigraphy
• At Home polysomnography and diagnostic video EEG telemetry

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and engaging individual with enthusiasm for the field of Clinical Neurophysiology.

Main duties of the job

Your main responsibilities will be to:

• Provide a highly complex, specialist Clinical Neurophysiology service.
• Undertake interpretation of results and provision of written factual reports, communicating directly with consultant staff regarding any findings.
• Present the findings of the video telemetry studies at the weekly multidisciplinary meeting, and contribute to ward rounds and teaching sessions held on the unit on a regular basis.
• Provide assistance with and actively participate in research projects carried out on the telemetry unit.
• Education and training of techniques to new members of staff and demonstration of the telemetry unit activity to professional visitors.
• Participate in quality assurance and audit within the department and on a regional basis.

The Sir Jules Thorn Telemetry Unit is a self-contained dedicated unit for monitoring patients with a variety of neurological, neurosurgical and neuropsychiatric conditions, performing more than 510 video-EEG telemetry studies and over 150 actigraphy studies per year.

Our dedicated Telemetry Unit consists of a tight knit team of 12 highly motivated Clinical Physiologists, over 15 dedicated nursing staff, 5 consultant Neurologists/Neurophysiologists and an epilepsy fellow. Medical cover is provided by registrars and SHOs attached to Firm 1 (Epilepsy). Together with our specialist administrative team and support facilities staff we are driven by our organisations strategic objectives and organisational values of kindness, safety, teamwork and improving.

This vacancy would strongly suit a qualified individual with experience in Clinical Neurophysiology who aligns with these objectives and values.

There are 7 beds with an additional private patient bed on Bloomsbury Ward. The unit operates over a 7day period, and clinical physiologists work by rota covering the hours of 8am to 6:45pm 7days a week.

NHS patients are seen on the Telemetry Unit with patients being referred from all over the country and occasionally overseas. The majority of patients are referred from consultants based either full or part-time at NHNN, however we accept referrals from consultants across the UK for this specialist service.

Skills and Abilities

• Provide evidence of practical skills to record routine neurophysiology investigations. This involves the application of many electrodes to the patient’s head for an EEG and the accurate placement of surface EMG electrodes and other electrodes used to record physiological parameters on patients being recorded on the telemetry unit.
• Provide evidence of ability to work in challenging environments.
• Demonstrate ability to work with patients with challenging or confrontational behaviour.
• Demonstrate ability to organise and prioritise their own work.

Communication

• Able to communicate effectively and sensitively with all patients, some of whom may have communication difficulties or challenging/aggressive behaviour.
• Able to communicate with departmental medical staff regarding the complex specialist data recorded. This includes being able to present the data at the weekly multidisciplinary meetings
