Job Summary

We are seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic and highly motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our busy and friendly pharmacy department at UHCW NHS Trust. You will be a confident communicator with excellent written and verbal skills, and you will need to have some hospital experience and be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team with flexibility regarding working practices.

  • Full-time – 37.5 hours per week
  • Weekends, late shifts and bank holidays as per rota
  • Banked hours and flexible shift patterns as required by the Trust’s pharmacy schedule
  • Immunisation and vaccination report required from your current UK occupational health provider or your UK GP
  • Full-time role within the UHCW NHS Trust, rated as good by the Care Quality Commission
  • When selected, you will be part of a large team of Clinical Pharmacy Technicians involved in providing a range of pharmacy services on behalf of the Trust to its patients and customers.
Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in medicines management activities, drug history taking, dispensing for discharge, re-use of patient’s own medication, transcription of discharge medication, ordering medication for patients, including One Stop Dispensing items and checking patients’ POD lockers.
  • Assist the Pharmacist in obtaining an accurate patient drug history using a variety of information sources (e.g., interview, patient notes, contacting GP, etc.).
  • Interpret and check electronic or paper prescriptions to ensure the information is clear and unambiguous regarding the drug, dosage, etc., and annotate additional instructions to improve clarity or compliance where appropriate.
  • Ensure that there is no therapeutic duplication, omission, unnecessary or contra-indicated medication prescribed, referring to the Pharmacist where appropriate.
  • Document details of any medicine related interventions made by self and ensure action taken is recorded.
  • Organise and maintain the patient specific supply of medicines working closely with Pharmacists and using the systems in place for this process.
  • Work with the ward team to manage medicines through Omnicell and Medicines Returns Units to improve cost effectiveness, reduce waste and save time.
  • Accurately interpret prescriptions using clinical knowledge of medication and the patient’s treatment to supply medication for the patient as required, liaising with the Pharmacist where knowledge required goes beyond their scope of responsibility.
  • Initiate the medicine supply function in a timely manner with regard to the urgency of prescribed items.
  • Liaise with the pharmacy Procurement Team to ensure adequate stock drug supplies are available at ward level taking into account prescribing variances.
  • Continually assess patient’s needs and assist them or parents/carers by using information to take the correct medication in the prescribed dose at the right time, referring them to a pharmacist when necessary.
  • Monitor and take appropriate action to ensure the efficient transfer of medication with patients as they move beds or wards.
  • Take action to ensure that discharge medication is supplied to patients on their designated wards in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Provide a range of information to medical staff, nursing staff and other healthcare professionals regarding medication and pharmacy related issues within their scope of responsibility.
  • Participate in the completion of ward Controlled Drug and medicines management audits in accordance with agreed schedules.
  • Support stock list reviews and update stock lists in a timely manner to reduce waste and ensure appropriate supply of medicines working with the Omnicell Team and Ward Services Manager.
  • Investigate and resolve any problems or complaints at ward level regarding the supply, storage and safe custody of drugs which may involve difficult communication with nursing staff, patients and other colleagues if non-adherence to Trust Regulations is identified.
  • Ensure unlicensed and high-cost drugs are prescribed in accordance to Trust policy and correct information is documented.
Key Qualifications
  • Must hold S/NVQ Level III in Pharmacy Services and BTEC National Certificate in Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Excellent IT skills and good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Positive working relationship with other healthcare professionals and ability to work flexibly within multidisciplinary team settings.
