Job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this position is Mon – Fri 8.30 – 4.30.

Would you like to practice in a new and innovative way? An opportunity to be one of the first clinical pharmacy technicians to practice in mental health services in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has arisen. You will join the pharmacy team at GRH/Leverndale and participate in the expansion of a new model of integrated pharmacy care within the wards providing services to patients from the West/South of Glasgow.

The post holder will support direct patient care through the following clinical activities:

  • Medicines reconciliation
  • Patient and staff education
  • Discharge planning
  • Medication history reviews
  • Monitoring of high risk medicines e.g. clozapine, lithium, high dose antipsychotics
  • Attending multi-disciplinary team meetings.

The role will evolve as the post holder develops and gains knowledge and experience and will complement the role of the clinical pharmacist, working together to improve clinical practice at ward level and release pharmacist capacity to develop their role within wards and community mental health teams. This will enable both pharmacy technicians and pharmacists to work at the highest level of practice.

The post holder will also be involved in the education and training of:

  • Pre-registration Pharmacy Technicians
  • Pharmacy Support workers
  • Nursing staff
  • Medical staff
  • Carers/support staff
  • Pre-registration Pharmacists

The post holder will also support the pharmacy technician led dispensary at Leverndale with

  • Outpatient activity for the Leverndale M/H site including accuracy checking of prescriptions
  • Operational day to day management of the very busy Leverndale dispensary
  • Management of daily workload and supervision of Band 4 pharmacy technicians and a team of pharmacy support workers
  • Preparing rotas for workload and amending when required at short notice
  • Managing the clozapine service at Leverndale for 1200 mostly outpatients including the dispensing and checking of prescriptions and ensuring all clozapine patients have valid blood results.
  • Liaising extensively with prescribers/nurses/wider healthcare team regarding safe clozapine supply

The post holder will also manage the competing demands that come from both their clinical and operational team roles.

The successful candidate must be a suitably qualified pharmacy technician, registered with the GPhC. You will also hold an accredited dispensary accuracy checking qualification. A strong interest in mental health practice is desirable however appropriate educaon and training will be provided.
