Job description

Job summary: This post is for a nurse ophthalmic Intra-vitreal Injector who will work as an active member of the multi-disciplinary team providing clinical care to our ophthalmic patients.

The successful candidate will work alongside the Specialty Consultants to develop the nurse-led injection service at the North Middlesex University Hospital. The successful candidate will support the clinical development of the service and includes clinical development of the nursing team. In addition to delivering the injections, there will also be associated outpatient clinics such as casualty and follow up clinics for medical retina.

The post holder will need to actively participate in teaching, training, and audits as appropriate.

Main duties of the job
  • Manage and support medical retina follow up clinics under supervision and independently for patients with Diabetic retinopathy, Age related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and other medical retina conditions.
  • Works as a Clinical Nurse Specialist within the Ophthalmology team able to diagnose, manage, investigate, and discharge medical retina patients within agreed protocols.
  • Work in collaboration with the Medical Retina Leads as well as supporting staff such as nurses and intravitreal injection coordinator/failsafe officer.
  • Demonstrates highly developed clinical nursing knowledge and skills in administering Intravitreal injections deemed competent to practice unsupervised.
  • The post holder will always have immediate access to advice from an ophthalmic specialist doctor whilst giving injections and that an ophthalmic specialist doctor is immediately available to manage any complications.
  • The post holder should be able to take up role of training junior nurse injectors including signing them off as competent at end of training period.
  • Work with patients to support compliance with and adherence to prescribed treatments.
