A major teaching hospital in London seeks a highly motivated Clinical Nurse Specialist for Paediatric Respiratory/Asthma. You will manage a caseload of children with asthma, lead nursing practice development, and be a key part of the MDT. We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible and enthusiastic individual to recruit into a band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist role for Paediatric Respiratory/Asthma.
At Kings College Hospital we are a specialist paediatric respiratory service and have helped pioneer the development of the specialty in the UK. We diagnose and treat infants and children with all types of respiratory problems and specialise in complex illnesses. Within our Paediatric Asthma Service, we see children referred by local GPs as well as by hospitals in south London and south east England. Our outpatients' clinics include general respiratory, asthma and difficult asthma and can be consultant led, or nurse led.
To manage with supervision (depending on experience) a caseload of children and young people with asthma.
To be a key part of the MDT involved in the care and management of children and young people with severe asthma
To ensure children and young people with any severity of asthma receive the highest standard of care
To act as a key resource and source of specialist support to colleagues across primary/secondary/tertiary care settings.

Main duties of the jobTo work as an autonomous clinical nurse specialist to co-ordinate and deliver expert nursing care effectively to a defined caseload of children, young people with respiratory conditions/asthma and their families across both the acute and community setting.
To lead in the development of evidence based clinical nursing practice in line with current research and guidelines.
To maintain clear lines of communication with primary healthcare teams in order to increase knowledge and facilitate the care of this group of children, young people and families in the community.
To act as a key resource and source of specialist support to colleagues across primary/secondary/tertiary care settings.
Particular emphasis is put at Kings on the need to ensure that all staff recognize their responsibility to deliver services in a high quality, courteous, patient focused manner maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.

1. Clinical Practice
To manage a caseload, under supervision as needed, ensuring continuity of a high standard of evidence-based care, ordering diagnostic tests, and making referrals as appropriate.

To work in the community where needed e.g. home visits for children with severe asthma
To be a key member of MDT discussions for children with severe asthma, and to co-ordinate meetings as appropriate
To participate in relevant fora at Care Group and Trust level to represent the service perspective
To participate in the development and updating of clinical protocols and strategies to enhance both the continuity and standard of specialist care for asthma, whilst ensuring equity of access to the service.
To provide information, clinical advice and support to children and families with asthma and act as a resource to other professionals involved in that childs care
To actively involve children, young people and families in providing feedback of their experience of the current service and suggestions for improvements.
To work with other colleagues within the MDT to develop the transition service for young people with asthma.
2. Leadership and Management
Empower children and young people and their families/carers through appropriate support and education.
To act as a resource for the childrens community nursing team, primary care and secondary care other community and multi-agency/multidisciplinary groups
Have the relevant skills to communicate complex and sensitive information to clients/ carers where there may be significant barriers to understanding. Communication will include both spoken and written methods
Maintain and provide accurate and timely client documentation e.g. patient records and reports reflecting highly specialist knowledge, sharing with others as appropriate and observing data protection guidelines
Follow best practice for the management of asthma in accordance with national, regional and professional standards
To participate in the operational and strategic development of the specialist epilepsy service, both in and outpatients.
To contribute actively to any relevant initiatives within the care group and provide support to senior colleagues and Head of Nursing.
To contribute positively to the leadership of nursing within the Care Group, acting as an effective role model.
To work with and support managers and clinical staff to identify areas where changes in practice are required.
To introduce measures to actively manage and reduce risk to patients. To ensure the formal reporting of adverse incidents in line with Trust policy.
To support the Head of Nursing in implementing Trust initiatives and strategies.
To network with the team of clinical nurse specialists within the Child Health Dept and Trust to evaluate, develop and promote the specialist-nursing role.
