The successful candidate will work as part of our multi-disciplinary team ensuring the delivery of a consistently high quality and compassionate service to a broad patient population including both cancer and non-malignant related diagnosis.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Generic

  • To provide highly specialist nursing advice underpinned by theory and experience to support

patients and their families/carers

  • To plan, develop, improve and promote the service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost

effective care

  • To act as an autonomous practitioner, independently planning, implementing and evaluating

programmes of care achieved through systematic and holistic assessment, clinical

examination skills, personalised care planning and independent onwards referral and

discharge to primary care team

  • To provide patients and staff with highly developed specialist advice to manage complex

symptoms

  • To develop and share expertise within the multidisciplinary team
  • To develop and utilize the skills and expertise to act as a resource in the care of patients

needs, ensuring an optimum level of service to patients and their carers

  • To work closely with community and network, other hospital and community staff to ensure

an effective seamless service

  • To deploy high level skills in order to provide effective communication systems of support

for patients

  • To develop and utilize the skills needed to embed patient and public involvement within the

sphere of specialist nursing practice

  • To ensure that all patients and families are aware of all treatment options, including clinical

trials

  • To transcribe radiology requests on ICE following successful completion of the IR(M)E

training course

  • To work as patient advocate, to help negotiate the patient journey and ensure optimum care

is provided to each patient

  • To nurture and maintain links with other health care agencies and and organisations

providing support and information to patients

  • To adhere to and promote in others the importance of infection control guidelines and

procedures

  • To act as a positive role model for nurses in the hospital through the demonstration of

excellent communication and clinical skills

  • To expertly deliver highly complex sensitive condition related information to patients and

relatives

  • To provide specialist support and advice in clinical areas, wards and outpatients, to optimise

quality improvement opportunities

  • To analyse and respond to challenging and complex clinical situations utilising highly

developed specialist knowledge and analytical and judgemental skills to assess a range of

options to formulate solutions and recommendations

  • To act as a change agent, using skills that will motivate and reassure staff through

negotiation and training, to facilitate the change process

Specific requirements of the post:

  • Provide education and support for patients receiving oral and/or parenteral chemotherapy including consent for treatment
  • Use of protocols, specialist knowledge and examination skills to assess patients in follow-up and pre-chemotherapy clinics
  • Authorisation of blood products following successful completion of National Blood Service training course
  • Provide telephone support for haematology cancer patients before, during and after chemotherapy treatment
  • Perform bone marrow biopsies following successful completion of programme of training
  • Undertake non-medical prescribing following successful completion of programme of training.

Education

  • To lead on and participate in the planning and delivery of formal and informal specialist education programmes for patients, carers and all staff
  • To lead on and participate in education forums locally
  • To ensure that professional knowledge and practice is regularly updated
  • To take personal responsibility for life-long learning and personal development through clinical supervision, appraisal and Knowledge and Skills Framework

Research and Audit

  • To collate and record quantitative and qualitative data that provides evidence of productivity, outcomes and quality, through audit and research
  • To regularly lead on and participate in clinical audit and research
  • To promote a culture of evidence based practice
  • To be involved with health promotion

Management and Leadership

  • To lead on policy and service development within a multidisciplinary team context
  • To lead on the development and implementation of protocols for specialist area of work and for the wider healthcare community served by North Bristol Trust
  • To be responsible for the gathering, analysis and evaluation of patient and other feedback to inform ongoing improvement in the patient experience in specialist area
  • To provide professional leadership for band 6 specialist nurses and be a role model in relation to nursing in specialist area
  • To be responsible for developing and coordinating job plans in order to maximise team effectiveness and efficiency
  • To plan the provision of day to day organisational tasks for self and others
  • To manage a highly complex caseload based on flexible principles, priorities and the care needs of patients
  • To lead on responding to complaints and queries, and have a working awareness of the North Bristol's NHS Trust's complaints procedure

To maintain accurate and concise records that produce statistical data for the purpose of evaluation and development of the service

  • To coordinate the collection of information and data required for annual reports and national peer review in collaboration with cancer services
  • To keep accurate and up to date patient records
  • To be responsible for the effective, efficient and safe use, maintenance and storage of resources and equipment used in the performance of the role
