Job summary

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a registered nurse to join the Pre-Operative Assessment Team. You will lead nurse-led clinics, assess adult elective surgical patients, and analyse test results to guide care.

Job summary

We are looking to recruit a registered nurse with excellent communication and leadership skills, to join our Pre-Operative Assessment Team.

Our Pre-Operative Assessment practitioners play a vital role in delivering safe and effective care to patients who are waiting for a surgical intervention. The Nursing team ensure patients are optimised and in the best health possible to undergo surgery.

We strive to provide the best care to our patients and are continuously developing our services.

You will join a multidisciplinary team who also practice patient‑centred care and share the Nursing teams passion for gold‑standard practice.

The Service covers three main hospital sites which are Sunderland Royal Hospital, South Tyneside District Hospital and Durham Treatment Centre. You would be required to work across all three; however, you would predominantly be based at Sunderland and South Tyneside Hospitals.

Main duties of the job
  • Co-ordinates & manages nurse-led clinics;
  • Assess health status of adult elective surgical patients with comprehensive history involving carers/relatives as appropriate;
  • Analysing clinical test results to guide/plan patient care;
  • Demonstrate autonomous, sound analytical and judgemental skills using range of sources to establish rationale for investigations & care plan;
  • Discuss plans for discharge, setting patient expectations for day‑case surgery;
  • Discuss implications of surgery including risks/benefits, help patient to make informed choice regarding consent, providing accurate/concise information;
  • Understand and share responsibility for developing specialist protocols and guidelines;
  • Review/evaluate results of investigation/care promptly, ensure patient optimisation pre‑operatively, avoiding inappropriate admissions, cancellations on the day and delays in surgery;
  • Directly refer patients to other agencies ensuring appropriate assessment etc prior to admission in collaboration with multidisciplinary team;
  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate documentation in accordance with NMC Standard for Records and Record Keeping;
  • Act in accordance with NMC Code of Conduct, guide others to do same;
  • Contribute to improving patient care via inter‑disciplinary decision making.
  • Personal and professional responsibility in prevention and control of infection, ensure compliance with best practice.

Physical Skills
  • Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
  • Able to travel access sites.
Experience
  • Experience of care delivery.
  • Experience of the specialist which would normally be gained through working as a Band 5.
  • Experience of leading a team/supervising junior staff.
  • Evidence of innovation in practice.
  • Evidence of practice development.
  • Experience of co-ordinating care for a caseload of patients.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Awareness of national Health and Social Care policy.
  • Knowledge of best practice in area of specialism.
  • Thorough understanding of expanded roles/professional practice issues.
  • Clinical teaching experience.
  • Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.
  • Able to work without supervision.
  • Competent in the use of IT packages.
  • Proven interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of competency in relation to clinical practices appropriate to the Post.
Desirable

  • Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional.
  • Degree in Nursing studies or other relevant clinical Degree or evidence of currently working towards this (UK equivalent).
  • Mentorship Certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Clinical skills accreditation or willingness to complete.
