Clinical Nurse Educator Band 6 (12 hours a week)

This 12 hour permanent teaching position within the Critical Care Services will suit an individual who is passionate about delivering expert clinical skills, and sharing their expert knowledge in a challenging and rewarding specialism where teaching is at the centre of patient care and staff development.

The Department of Critical Care is very proud to have achieved a Gold ACE accreditation in 2024. We aim to maintain this status by continuing to develop motivated and enthusiastic staff who will work alongside us to deliver expert care to critically ill patients and their families.

The proposed interview date is 22nd May.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a highly skilled, knowledgeable and motivated Registered Nurse to join our Critical Care team as a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE). The successful applicant will assist the Band 7 CNE, to lead the training and professional development of nursing staff, of all grades, within the cross county critical care service and wider Trust as appropriate.

We are looking for an individual who possesses excellent communication and leadership skills with evidence of working creatively and with a clear determination to deliver safe, effective and high-quality patient care that is underpinned with kindness and compassion. Having the ability to role model a positive attitude towards service delivery and progression is key to this position.

There is the expectation that the post holder will work collaboratively with personnel from other departments and organisations to continuously raise the standard and provision of critical care nurse training and education to include other units within the SW network and local universities.

Job responsibilities

Main Purpose of the Job

  1. To support the Band 7 CNE in the training and education of nursing staff, of all grades, within DCC.
  2. To deliver & evaluate the educational strategy within Critical Care.
  3. To support the Matron, the Band 7s and wider team to determine and deliver on service strategic objectives.
  4. To act as a resource for registered nurses within critical care disseminating clinical skills and knowledge.
  5. To encourage interdisciplinary working and education to meet the needs of critically ill patients.
  6. To maintain visibility within the clinical area, as a clinical expert role modelling high standards of care, evidence-based practice and effective leadership.
  7. To support the recruitment of nurses through effective processes to enable the selection of the most suitable candidates.
  8. To support the retention & recruitment strategy by promoting clinical support, job satisfaction and opportunities for staff personal and professional development.
  9. To support the management & maintenance of training records and ensure fairness and transparency of training resource allocation.
  10. To represent DCC at local, network and national education forums & deputise in the Band 7s absence.
  11. To take an active role in the development and implementation of local guidelines and policies relating to practice.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required
  1. Level 1 Registered Nurse.
  2. Degree in relevant area of practice.
  3. Critical Care course.
  4. Have requisite level of Critical Care experience at Band 5 level or above.
  5. Recognised for possessing expert critical care knowledge and clinical skills and for demonstrating high standards of patient care.

Clinical Practice
  1. Deliver, demonstrate and supervise safe and appropriate care within a challenging and changing clinical environment.
  2. Administer, demonstrate and supervise the delivery of medications within the Procedure for the Ordering, Prescribing, and Administration of Medications (POPAM) guidelines.
  3. Work alongside other health professionals to provide high standards of care for patients within DCC.
  4. Assist in the development and implementation of any clinical initiative or introduction of new equipment within DCC.
  5. Maintain clinical skills & work clinically on an ad-hoc basis.
  6. During surge or increased clinical activity, you may be required to work clinical shifts.
Management
  1. Organise own time within 08.00 20.00 Monday to Friday hours to enable effective delivery of the key roles and responsibilities outlined.
  2. Assist with the development and delivery of a formal educational programme for staff.
  3. Contribute to the delivery of effective education and development programmes, specifically the national competency programme for adult critical care nurses.
  4. Assist with the recruitment and induction of Band 5 nurses.
  5. Assist with the maintenance of training records.
  6. Promote education and training and seek additional resources where appropriate.
  7. Work alongside Band 6 & 7 colleagues in managing any underperformance.
  8. Support the nurse team to deliver staff appraisals and promote mandatory training to achieve key performance indicators.
  9. Link with other providers of internal training to identify opportunities for joint education and improvement projects.
Leadership
  1. Assist with the strategic leadership roles for education within DCC.
  2. Demonstrate a positive and pro-active approach to the development of nurses within DCC.
  3. Role model high standards of patient care, communication, commitment and organisation for others to follow.
  4. Encourage and promote a shared leadership model, enabling and empowering others to take the lead with various initiatives.
  5. Maintain the ability to work as clinical nurse co-ordinator for DCC when necessary.
Research and audit
  1. Work in a manner that promotes any audits or research taking place within DCC.
  2. Promote and demonstrate the use of evidence-based practice.
  3. Assist in the collection and reporting of data as appropriate to maintain key performance indicators.

  1. Help to maintain continuous development of an educational infrastructure to deliver and support training within Critical Care.
  2. Provide expert educational support on real-time projects.
  3. Establish networks with all education providers and promote the work of the Division and the Trust.

Qualifications
