Job description

The role holder will lead a clinical team in Exeter in assessing patients in conjunction with other members of the interdisciplinary team, ensuring treatment is provided based on best practice. The role holder will support the Centre Manager to ensure the highest standards of clinical, operational, financial, health & safety, environmental, and governance within the centre.

Within the Orthotic department, there are a wide variety of MDTs and extended practice clinics which the role holder will be leading, including but not limited to:

  • Paediatrics
  • Diabetic foot
  • Foot and ankle
  • Scoliosis and Spinal

Opcare Exeter is an established prosthetics and orthotics service based in The Exeter Mobility Centre in a purpose-built facility. All staff work closely across departments to ensure a high-quality service is provided to our patients.

Opcare provides inpatient, outpatient, and community orthotic care for a wide variety of patients. There is a complex mix of adult and paediatric patients, providing opportunities to be exposed to interesting and varied caseloads.

Alongside running general, paediatric, external, and in-house clinics, the role leads and supports the day-to-day delivery of orthotic services within the local area. There are opportunities to work across company networks and groups, including 3D manufacturing, scanning, and clinical governance projects.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver excellence in clinical patient care to all service users in accordance with service criteria.
  • Line management of the clinical team within their service, building and maintaining a culture supporting personal growth and development, providing mentoring to less experienced orthotists, graduates, and students, as well as guiding and supporting more experienced staff.
  • Effectively manage clinical prescriptive standards in line with company product matrices and the service budget.
  • Create effective professional relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external) to support the success criteria of the service.
  • Evaluate, encourage, and support a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the service and the wider organization.
  • The role will be instrumental in developing and implementing service improvements for patient benefit.
  • Liaise with the on-site workshop and manufacturing team in Exeter to ensure high-quality output.
  • Join an enthusiastic and busy team, supported with local, regional, and national training to develop clinical skills supporting the service. The aim is to deliver a first-class service while applying the most advanced clinical and technical solutions available to patients.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks
  • Line manage all orthotic clinical staff, including appraisals, training, and performance management.
  • Lead by example to ensure engagement, motivation, and achievement of patient and business objectives.
  • Collaborate with workshop staff, admin teams, the Orthotic Manager, and senior management for service delivery.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure referral pathways meet RTT targets and KPIs.
  • Oversee clinical workload allocation to meet organizational requirements.
  • Review HCPC registration status and maintain CPD portfolios for staff.
  • Resolve patient complaints and queries professionally.
  • Report on clinical activity and progress regularly.
  • Coordinate clinical audits, research, and development.
  • Assess, measure, cast, scan, and treat patients, offering patient choice where appropriate.
  • Develop and review clinical policies and pathways, auditing their effectiveness.
  • Maintain communication with manufacturing facilities for product quality and timeliness.
  • Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping.
  • Escalate concerns regarding product quality or service issues.
  • Set personal and team objectives, reporting on progress.
  • Ensure adequate staff cover during absences.
  • Maintain patient dignity and keep them informed about their treatment.
  • Practice within HCPC guidelines and ensure confidentiality.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory standards, HSE, and DQA audits.
