Job Description for Specialist Psychologist

To provide highly specialist psychological assessments, utilising information from a broad range of highly specialist psychological tool kits including psychometric and semi-structured clinical methodologies, where trained to do so. Integrating highly specialist assessments into a psychological specialist formulation of complex and challenging service users drawing on a range of psychological theoretical perspectives.

To formulate and provide highly specialist and complex judgements based on a multi-factorial psychological understanding and current research and evidence-based practice. To implement a range of specialist and highly complex psychological treatment plans or management for complex and challenging service users.

To evaluate, analyse and make judgements on the effectiveness of complex psychological treatments for complex and challenging service users. To make highly specialist adjustments to complex psychological care treatments to ensure the most effective treatments are delivered.

To undertake a range of highly specialist and complex psychological therapeutic interventions, drawing on a range of psychological models and employing a range of modalities (individual, family, and group), adapted and tailored to the needs of the individual and the context, with ongoing evaluation of outcomes.

This includes ensuring the use of current research findings and best practice guidance. To provide clinical leadership and highly specialist psychological consultation, guidance, and ongoing support to other psychological therapists and the MDT in formulation and appropriate therapeutic approaches or intervention plans.

To undertake highly specialist psychologically based risk assessments and risk management for complex and/or severe service users, providing guidance and formulations on psychological aspects of risk to the MDT, including medical staff.

To provide expertise and guidance to facilitate effective and appropriate psychological practice throughout service delivery with all practitioners, including medical staff. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment, and discharge of own caseload of complex and challenging service users managed within talking therapies/Intermediate Mental Health Services.

To organise own clinical time efficiently, make decisions involving complex factors, and communicate effectively, managing interpersonal skills barriers in complicated, difficult, and contentious matters with service users and their families.

To participate in recruitment, selection, and induction of staff when requested. To act as a lead specialist and advise Psychological Service Managers and Clinical leads on service aspects needing psychological or organizational attention.

To contribute to the development, evaluation, and monitoring of operational policies and services, and to implement policies for complex service users within talking therapies services in collaboration with management.

To contribute to the systematic governance of psychological practice, including record-keeping standards, and to participate in professional psychology recruitment processes.

To serve as a representative of talking therapies in meetings and service events, and to contribute to the management of waiting lists and referral trends.

To advise on service developments within the community care pathway. Teaching, training, and supervision include providing highly specialist clinical supervision, ensuring training placements, and supporting other clinicians in psychologically based interventions.

To continue professional development, participate in supervision and CPD, and maintain registration with relevant professional bodies.

To lead and participate in research, service evaluation, and project management, including audit, with a focus on developing and improving services, and disseminating research findings.
