Clinical Lab Technician, Hinxton and Great Abingdon

As a Clinical Lab Technician, you will be primarily based at our Hinxton site with some work at the Illumina Centre based in Great Abington. You will receive full training in all laboratory tasks, including Genotyping, Sequencing and Library Preparation, and collaboration on various projects.

Why us

The Clinical Lab Technician role is essential for the smooth operation of ILS's customer services. This position involves performing a variety of high-quality tests, including whole genome sequencing, DNA extraction, and proteomic assays, with some workflows accredited to ISO 15189 standards. Additionally, the technician will support development projects, such as whole transcriptome sequencing, to introduce new tests into the service environment.

Based in a laboratory setting, the technician will work as part of a team across two locations in Cambridge (Hinxton and Great Abingdon). The successful candidate will employ various techniques, including DNA quantification, DNA and RNA library preparation, DNA sequencing using the NovaSeq platform, and DNA extraction. While some processes are highly automated with Hamilton Star and Tecan Robots, others require manual bench-top assays. The team operates on a shift system over seven days (9 am to 5 pm).

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to

  • Perform routine lab tasks as assigned.
  • Positively respond to changes in priority through the day whilst maintaining quality and meeting defined timeframes.
  • Take immediate action when confronted with a problem; recognize when issues require escalation to senior staff and offer basic solutions.
  • Perform routine maintenance and QC on laboratory equipment to ensure it is fit for purpose and operating within set validation criteria.
  • Monitor lab consumables: re-order as required to ensure stock levels are maintained to prescribed levels to sustain laboratory throughput.
  • Clean and organize common lab areas and take responsibility for all housekeeping tasks being completed on time.
  • Always follow H&S procedures at Illumina and adhere to risk assessments.
  • Comply with the International Standard (ISO 15189) and QMS.
  • Record data to GDP, strictly follow WIs and raise quality events when necessary.
  • Contribute to overall team goals whilst maintaining individual output.

Preferred Requirements

  • BSc/MSc strongly preferred OR Some molecular biology laboratory experience required with no degree.
  • Some industry experience in a laboratory preferred but not required Experience in automated workflows preferred but not required.
  • Detail-oriented and conscientious.
