Responsibilities

The laboratory technologist performs waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, Bus. & Prof. Code Section 1204, and must possess skills appropriate to their education, training, and experience. Responsibilities include:

  1. Adhering to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  2. Following quality control policies and documenting corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  3. Identifying problems affecting test performance and correcting or reporting them promptly.
  4. Performing a variety of laboratory procedures in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines.
  5. Performing and documenting maintenance on instruments and equipment.
  6. Reviewing the accuracy of patient results before reporting.
  7. Recognizing age-specific differences in expected results.
  8. Ensuring proficiency testing samples are tested properly and in accordance with regulations.
  9. Performing venipuncture or capillary puncture as needed.
  10. Assisting in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
  11. Adhering to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and HR policies.
  12. In the absence of a supervisor, may serve as Lead Tech.
  13. May be assigned responsibilities related to LIS and POC testing.
  14. Performing other tasks as assigned by the department manager or director.
Qualifications

Education and Work Experience:

  • ASCP certification or equivalent required.
  • Minimum two years of hospital laboratory experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or as required by CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).
  • Current and valid State License if required by state law.
