Applications are encouraged from those currently employed as a Band 7 or qualifying in 2024. You will be supported to develop your skills across predetermined competencies of therapy, supervision, teamwork and leadership. Once you have been assessed as meeting these competencies, you will move to band 8a in the service.

This post includes working sometime in CYP, either a half a day or seeing some cases so maintain skills in this area which can be discussed at interview. Required working days would be Tuesday, either Monday or Friday, other day to be agreed on appointment.

Main duties of the job

Clinical interventions include individual CBT, ACT and mindfulness-based therapy, neuropsychological rehabilitation and specific condition interventions such as for chronic pain. The post will involve close working with non-psychology colleagues from across the MDT. A systematic rehabilitation approach facilitating self-management skills is core to our provision, with the team leading the renowned Stoke Mandeville Spinal Needs Assessment and Goal Planning Programme (finalist for HSJ in 2016).

The NSIC provides inpatient care to 30% of adult spinal cord injuries within NHS England and is the leading provider of paediatric spinal cord injury services. The NSIC at Stoke Mandeville Hospital pioneered the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury and the psychology team is an active contributor to the ongoing research and innovation of the Centre, with over 150 publications in peer reviewed journals, textbooks, and an increasing portfolio of research impact including podcasts, policy/guideline development and social media engagements.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

• Post Graduate doctoral qualification in Clinical Psychology recognised by the BPS.
• Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the British Psychological Society.
• Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Psychologist.
• Post doctoral training (e.g. in a therapeutic model)

EXPERIENCE

• Supervised experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
• Experience of working as a psychologist in a multidisciplinary setting
• Able to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
• Experience of teaching and training
• Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings
• Experience or interest in working across the lifespan including adults, older adults and CYP
• Assessed Experience of working as a Psychologist / Psychological Therapist at a specialist level.
• Experience of teaching, training and professional and clinical supervision of a range of health care professionals.
• Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups including complex risk assessment
• Experience within an acute hospital environment, representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
• Demonstrated expertise in Clinical Health Psychology.

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

• Skills in assessing people with complex psychological, health and social difficulties
• Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
• Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc.)
• Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.
• Ability to identify and employ as appropriate clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour
