Post: Clinical Fellow in Urology ST3+ based at Southmead Hospital

The Bristol Urological Institute wishes to appoint a Clinical Fellow in Urology ST3+, initially for one year from August 2025.

It is desirable that candidates have experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent.

Overseas applicants are expected to be eligible for registration with the General Medical Council and have passed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum overall score of 7.5. This must be clearly outlined on application. Please check the GMC website for details.

Please note North Bristol NHS Trust will not pay any interview expenses in connection with this post.

Work of the Department

Southmead Hospital offers Urology services through the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI). The Institute is a tertiary referral centre and has gained a global reputation and has become a major National and International surgical, education and research centre. The clinicians at the BUI have always been at the cutting edge; introducing robotic surgery for urological cancers and reconstruction, pioneering urodynamics, promoting minimally invasive kidney stone surgery, advancing complex andrology/penile cancer, genito-urethral reconstruction and investing in community delivered diagnostics.

The Urology Department at North Bristol runs out of two hospitals, the main hospital site in Bristol – Southmead Hospital - and a district hospital in Weston-super-mare - Weston General Hospital.

The holder of this post will be based at Southmead Hospital.

The Trust has University Teaching status and is associated with both the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

The clinicians at the BUI have always been at the cutting edge; introducing robotic surgery for urological cancer sand reconstruction, pioneering urodynamics, promoting minimally invasive kidney stone surgery, advancing complex andrology/penile cancer, genito-urethral reconstruction and investing in community delivered diagnostics.

The Bristol Urological Institute (BUI) is a long established research unit. It attracts major national and international grants, the BUI publishes extensively in all areas of urology and coordinates and participates in international clinical trials.

This post is best suited to a trainee wishing to gain core urology experience. This may suit an individual wanting to apply for future ST3 Urology or CESR.

The post holder will participate in an on call rota and will be responsible for the day to day management of ward patients.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the service activities in the department.

Research

½ day dedicated research session is provided for all fellows. There are several ongoing research projects and fellows are expected to participate in these projects, successfully publish, as well as undertaking at least one audit project during their training.

Teaching

The Bristol Urological Institute has an active teaching programme and Fellows and Registrars are expected to actively participate in this activity. The post holder will be available to undertake teaching sessions for medical students and junior doctors as required. In certain circumstances you may be required to cover a colleague’s clinical duties in order that they may deliver teaching sessions.

Annual Leave

You will be entitled to 13 ½ days (pro rata) annual leave per six month period and may claim a day off in lieu if rostered on duty on a Bank Holiday.

Study Leave

10 days (pro rata) study leave is allocated per 12 month period, for this post although time off for CPD must be agreed mutually with the clinical and educational supervisors, and the education lead.
