Job overview

Applications are invited to apply for a Senior Clinical Fellow role to support the Gynae Oncology Team with the implementation of the Unscheduled Bleeding Pathway and the transformation of the urgent referral pathways. This role is for a 12 months fixed term contract with our friendly and supportive team in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the James Paget University Hospital. This modern District General Hospital has approx. 500 beds and is situated in a coastal holiday area of East Anglia. It serves a population of 250,000 that increases considerably in the summer months.

Our Consultant team has recently been expanded and this additional role will be dedicated to the improvement of the Cancer Faster Diagnostic Standard and working with primary care partners to implement and embed the Unscheduled Bleeding Pathway.

This role will also ensure we have appropriate cover for the rota commitments and improve the level of support our Tier 2 team are able to provide for the clinical work within the service.

Applicants will be required to undertake Obstetric and Gynaecology commitments, so we are looking for individuals with good Obstetric skills who can commit to the provision of high quality Obstetric care.

Main duties of the job

  • Working with the Gynae Oncology Team and primary care partners to implement the Unscheduled Bleeding Pathway.
    • Support the transformation of the USC referral route in conjunction with the above.
    • Work with the Gynae Oncology Team to support the diagnostic pathway of patients and the timely downgrade of appropriate patients to improve the Faster Diagnostic Standard.
    • Gynaecological outpatient clinics
    • Theatre duties
    • Close supervision of the work of the first on-call trainee when undertaking on-call duties
    • Training of Specialty Trainees and Medical Students
    • The postholder will be required to oversee the management of the inpatient ward routines, the admission and discharge of all patients admitted to the unit in consultation with the consultant concerned, together with the ward Specialty Trainee's and all other health professionals.
    • The post-holder will be expected to participate in case presentations and departmental audits.
    • The postholder may be required to undertake operating lists indirectly supervised commensurate with the postholder's capabilities and patient safety.

The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (JPUH) provides Medical Services for a population of approximately 230,000 living in South East Norfolk and North East Suffolk, plus a large number of visitors to the coast and Broads National Park during the summer months. The Obstetric and Gynaecology Service has a friendly and supportive team of Consultants, Medical Staff, Midwives, Nursing and Allied Health Professionals supporting around 1,800 births a year across the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area.

The hospital is situated in Gorleston, 200 metres from the beach and picturesque countryside, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border close to the towns of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft and within commuting distance from several small villages with affordable housing and local amenities. Residents enjoy a good quality of life with easy access to the Norfolk Broads and unspoilt coastline with opportunities for wildlife, walking, cycling and sailing. The historic city of Norwich is only 20 miles with excellent schools, rail links to London and an international airport, for easy access to the Continent and beyond.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service to observe the Trust's agreed policies and procedures drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.

To assume responsibility for and facilitate contact from members of staff with delegated duties for personally accountable patient care.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • ALS,ALERT or Equivalent
  • Successful completion of Part 1 MRCOG at time of application
Desirable criteria
  • Post CCT
Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement of competencies of ST3 and above
  • Ability to prioritise clinical needs with awareness of own limitations and the ability to know when to consult senior advice.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Training / experience in intermediate gynaecological surgery, including diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy
  • Competent to perform instrumental delivery and uncomplicated LSCS and ERPC
Desirable criteria
  • Other relevant degrees or diplomas
  • Advanced Training in gynaecology surgery/ATSM/SITM
Academic Achievements

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of audit and research
  • Ability to provide complete details of employment history
