Job summary

The neuromuscular post provides support for a mainly outpatient-based neuromuscular service and day case activity around SMA gene therapy and other disease-modifying treatments. Post holders will share clinical responsibilities with other clinical fellows and the 8 StRs. They will contribute to developing ward protocols, audit projects, and clinical service guidelines. Clinical research activities will also be encouraged. An on-call commitment for neurology and neurosurgery, including long-day shifts and weekends, is required.

This post offers a unique training opportunity for a post-MRCPCH paediatric neurology trainee, who has completed or is about to complete CCT training and wishes to pursue a focused 1-year training in neuromuscular disorders, supporting a career in paediatric neurology with a special interest in neuromuscular disorders. The role is full-time, but part-time applications are welcome.

Main duties of the job
Specific Clinical Duties
  • Clerking and follow-up care of children in outpatient, day case, and inpatient settings at GOSH
  • Completing and collating investigations for clinic patients
  • Involvement in teaching, research, and audits
  • Gaining skills in assessment, investigation, and multidisciplinary management of neuromuscular disorders
  • Supervising the neuromuscular SPR in clinical work
  • Training in needle muscle biopsy and its interpretation, organizing the muscle biopsy list
  • Training in disease-modifying treatments for SMA, mainly through work on the day case ward
  • Leading in clinical-radiological correlation and organizing muscle MRI meetings
  • Advising on neurological issues for patients both within and outside the hospital
  • Collaborating with departments such as Neuroradiology, Neurophysiology, Histopathology, PICU, Respiratory, Orthopaedics, and Cardiology

Qualifications and experience
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP, MRCPCH, or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration or equivalent English proficiency

Desirable qualifications include higher degrees and PALS/APLS. Experience required includes 18 months in paediatrics, 6 months in acute paediatrics with on-call, and 2 years in paediatric neurology. Research, teaching, and publication experience are advantageous.
