The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at Aintree is collocated with the Emergency Department and comprises an Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) Unit, an assessment unit with 13 beds, a 4-bed High Care (Enhanced Care) Area, and a 25-bed area.

The acute medicine team includes a core team of Acute Medicine Physicians supported by Consultant Physicians from other specialties. The team is supported by two Acute Medicine Specialty Trainees (StRs), two GPVTS trainees, two IMT 1-2 trainees, two IMT 3 trainees, two ACCS trainees, two F2 trainees, three FY1 trainees, seven Advanced Nurse Practitioners (plus one in training), three Physician Associates, as well as nursing and pharmacy teams.

Senior clinical involvement is available 12 hours per day, 7 days a week. Approximately 80-90 medical admissions occur daily, many of which are seen within our AEC. The AMU Consultants work closely with the AED team, on-call medical Specialist Registrars, IMT, and Consultant Physicians across the medical directorate to support the management of the acute take.

In this role, you will work within the department and with the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT). Responsibilities include reviewing medical patients supported by consultants and senior colleagues during admission, ward rounds, and in AEC. Some work will involve collaborating with acute medicine and specialty consultants to see patients still in the Emergency Department.

You will be encouraged to participate in quality improvement projects and supported to gain publications or conference presentations to enhance your experience and development during your post.
