Clinical Fellow in Upper GI Surgery (POST CCT)

The closing date is 21 May 2025

This post is designed to support the activities of the TOGU and provide specialist training at post-CCT level in OG surgery. The post will be based at City Hospital Campus of Nottingham University Hospitals. The post-holder will work with all of the OG surgeons in turn and be responsible to the clinical lead in OG surgery.

This is a 12-month post specifically intended for senior trainees seeking additional experience in OG surgery before applying for consultant posts in OG surgery with a planned start date of Jan 2026.

Main duties of the job

There will specifically be opportunities to undertake training in open and minimally invasive OG cancer surgery, complex benign OG surgery for hiatus hernias and achalasia, and endoscopy therapies e.g. stenting, endomucosal resections (EMR) and peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM).

About us

TOGU at NUH manages patients with benign and malignant OG conditions for Nottinghamshire and surrounding areas. This is performed within a framework of a multi-disciplinary team where all individuals are encouraged to contribute effectively towards patient care. In addition to maintaining these high standards, there is a commitment towards research and the unit is committed to offer access to a clinical trial for every patient and are currently recruiting to 7 different clinical trials. Further, TOGU is one of the largest contributors to the oesophageal cancer clinical and molecular stratification (OCCAMS study)

TOGU provides specialist tertiary referral OG services to a population of 2 million patients in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. We are one of the biggest OG cancer centres in Europe.

Job responsibilities

The primary duty of this post is to provide flexible cover for OG lists, clinics and endoscopy lists as required. The post-holder is expected to be available to help with all the departmental activities each day and will have duties related purely to the OG department during this time period. While contribution to the general surgical on-call service is not currently required, this may be subject to change during the fellowship. The exact timetable for the successful candidate will vary on a week-by-week basis depending on theatre case mix, staffing availability and expertise.

It is anticipated that the post-holder will teach more junior members of the team to do basic laparoscopic procedures. The post-holder will take part in the delivery of an acute OG on-call system under supervision of experienced consultant surgeons. The work intensity will vary depending on the number of clinics and lists running each week and a flexible approach is necessary in this situation.
