Job summary

The Maxillofacial Unit at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a qualified medical practitioner to support service delivery while receiving training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. This position includes participation in clinics and surgical theatre practice, as well as tailored job planning based on the candidate's experience.

Job description

The Maxillofacial Unit offers experience in many aspects of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Specialist interests include Head & Neck Oncology, Craniofacial Trauma, Facial Deformity and skin Cancer of the Head & Neck. There is a vast amount of skin cancer cases performed every year and we have a comprehensive, dedicated Skin MDT run with Dermatologists and Pathologists. In addition there are links with the Tumour Board for Skin which takes place at the Royal London Hospital. The major Head & Neck surgery takes place at UCLH in central London.

Although the main purpose of this post is to provide service delivery there will be a significant element of training in many aspects of OMFS to allow the candidate to prepare him or herself to enter the higher training in the speciality.

Successful candidate can be double qualified in a pre- T3 position.

The job plan will be tailored to align with the successful candidate's experience and to support their individual training needs.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will attend general and multidisciplinary clinics and undertake ward rounds on their own or with the Consultant on call as well as assisting in clinics. There are joint clinics with orthodontists, both paediatric and adults, and joint dermatologists clinics with the MOHS surgeon which the successful candidate will be encouraged to attend. In addition there will be sufficient opportunity to get oral surgery experience in both the MOS and Theatre setting supervised by a Consultant or the specialty Doctor. There are weekly consultant theatre lists encompassing Salivary gland surgery, Facial Deformity,Craniofacial Trauma, Skin cancer and Oral Surgery, where the successful candidate willbe allocated to assist.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.
