Job description

Applications are invited for the above post to commence as soon as possible for an initial twelve months with possible extension. The 3 appointees will undertake duties equivalent to those of an FY2 doctor and participate on the full shift rota alongside the FY2 doctors within the surgical specialities.

The Trust has University Hospital status which provides an academic environment to the hospital and good facilities for study and training. In addition to an active postgraduate teaching programme, we welcome medical students from the UCL Medical School throughout the year. We have an excellent reputation for junior staff training. Within the Centre of Multi-Professional Educational & Training (COMET) is the Medical Education Department, the library including an IT suite, and the Training & Development Department. The main aim of the Medical Education Department is to promote postgraduate and continuing medical education and training for all doctors and dentists. The Hospital actively promotes career development and progression for all staff.

Duties are allocated by the supervising Consultant and include:

  • Responsibility for the care of in-patients admitted under the supervising consultant
  • Detailed clerking and initiation of all necessary investigations for the patient
  • Keeping full notes and ensuring medical records are constantly updated
  • Attendance at ward rounds
  • Completion of discharge notes
  • Attendance at education and training meetings
  • Undertaking additional duties in occasional emergency and unforeseen circumstances
  • Being available for irregular commitments, outside normally rostered duties, which are essential for patient care
  • Working under the supervision of and being responsible to their respective Consultant, or the On Call Consultant and the Clinical Directors within General Surgery

The post currently participates in a full shift rota pattern, with an on-call commitment of one in eleven (1:11), and prospective cover. Travel between hospital sites in Bedford and Luton may be required.

We have state-of-the-art facilities and are committed to delivering the best patient care using the best clinical knowledge and technology available. Our Trust provides hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 people living across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas.

The L&D has a friendly atmosphere and good working relationships. The Hospital has an excellent track record of financial and senior executive stability and provides an academic environment with opportunities for postgraduate training and education.

The Hospital has excellent access to the surrounding areas, with easy access to central London and the rural Chilterns. Excellent schools are nearby, and there is good access to the Midlands and North by road or rail.

All applicants will be required to demonstrate a working knowledge of the English language and have full registration with the General Medical Council at the time of application. The appointment will be subject to full Occupational Health Clearance and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidates prior to commencement.
