Job description

The Trust seeks to appoint a Clinical Fellow in Critical Care. This is a 1-year fixed-term post, and applicants are expected to have suitable experience within Critical Care.

You will join a dynamic team of doctors within the division of Anaesthesia at BHRUT, which provides anaesthetic, critical care, and pain services for the local population. These include elective and emergency anaesthesia supporting various surgical specialties, a consultant-led critical care outreach team, acute pain ward rounds, and outpatient clinics for chronic pain, pre-assessment, and critical care follow-up.

BHR is one of the largest Associate Teaching Hospitals, serving over 700,000 people across two main sites—Queens and King George Hospitals—and peripheral sites at Barking, Dagenham, and Brentwood. The hospital is a major Neurosciences and cancer centre, undergoing further development as a tertiary referral centre for North East London and Essex, including additional critical care capacity.

The role involves contributing to high-quality, responsive critical care services for Barking, Havering, and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. Responsibilities include caring for patients in ITUs and HDUs at Queen’s and King George Hospitals, reviewing patients, initiating critical care treatment in Emergency & Theatre Recovery, and transferring patients intra- and inter-hospital.

Please see the attached job description and person specification for more details.

We are an organization committed to continuous improvement, having moved beyond special measures, opening new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub, and receiving recognition such as our CEO being named top by the Health Service Journal in 2024.

We operate from two main sites—KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford—with busy emergency departments serving over 330,000 visitors last year. We are campaigning for £35m to transform Queen’s A&E and eliminate corridor care.

Our patients benefit from initiatives like the Women’s Health Hub in Ilford, an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch, and Community Diagnostic Centres providing extensive diagnostic services.

Our diverse staff of 8,000 from 146 countries includes many working flexibly and over 400 on apprenticeship programmes. We are proud to be a London Living Wage employer and are introducing an electronic patient record system to enhance care and staff efficiency.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Complying with the agreed job plan, reviewed annually.
  2. Participating in out-of-hours emergency resident cover for critical care.
  3. Contributing to postgraduate and continuing education for medical, nursing, technical staff, GPs, and allied professions.
  4. Deputising in the absence of colleagues during leave or short-term sickness.
  5. Engaging in clinical audit processes within the Trust and regionally, in cooperation with the Audit Committee.
