Detailed job description and main responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The appointee will be based at The Christie and will be complemented by Specialty Doctors, IMT deanery trainees and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP).

The Oncology Critical Care Unit (OCCU) is a state-of-the-art eight-bedded facility. The critical care service complements a comprehensive range of cancer specialties including surgical, clinical, medical, and Haematological oncology. The unit delivers about 600 patient episodes per year; 60% of which are surgical.

In addition, the post offers experience in clinical Anaesthesia, under immediate consultant supervision.

Each day shift will commence with a handover and the post holder will be required to:

  1. Examine OCCU patients
  2. Present the patients to the consultant intensivist on the ward round when detailed management plans will be made
  3. The post holder will then be required to carry out those management plans
  4. Hand over the care of his/her patients to the person covering the unit for the night

The OCCU resident is also a member of the cardiac arrest team and may be required to attend to acutely unwell patients outside the unit.

During the day the OCCU resident works under direct supervision by the OCCU consultant; out-of- hours the OCCU consultant is on call from home.

Duration and Monitoring of the Programme

This fellowship is for 12 months. The post is available to commence in August 2025. The post is based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 4BX. Educational supervision will be provided.

Continuing Professional Development

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Although this is not a recognised training post, the following benefits are available:

  • Trust and Departmental induction programmes
  • Weekly departmental teaching sessions
  • Experience and training in intensive care of adult cancer patients, including cardiovascular support, invasive CVS monitoring and mechanical ventilation.
  • Regular time-tabled sessions in clinical anaesthesia for a wide range of oncological surgical procedures, often complex and requiring multidisciplinary input.
  • Regular time-tabled sessions for supportive activities such as audit, administration etc
  • Acute pain service
  • Chronic pain management service
  • Support for developmental needs of the post holder

This post would be particularly suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in one of the acute medical (Anaesthesia, Intensive care, Emergency or Acute Medicine), oncological or surgical specialties.

Job Plan

This is an example of a potential rota pattern that the successful candidate would be working in the department, but would be agreed in a job planning meeting with Clinical Director for Anaesthesia and Critical Care when commencing in post.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential for the post

  • Medical Degree
  • Full registration with GMC
  • Advanced Life Support

Desirable for the post

  • FRCA or its equivalent
  • Airway skills More advanced competencies in Anaesthesia and/or Intensive care medicine (ICM).

Experience

Essential criteria

  • At least 3 months experience in ICM and Anaesthesia.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the importance of audit and research.

Desirable criteria

  • 3 years' experience in Anaesthesia & Critical Care.
  • Evidence of active participation in clinical research / audit

Personal skills

Essential criteria

  • Good communication skills in verbal and written English
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Working well in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Calm, efficient under pressure
  • Knowing when to ask for help
  • To recognise personal limitations but to work competently within these boundaries
  • Reliable, punctual, hard-working, enthusiastic.

Desirable criteria

  • Awareness of specific needs of patients and carers, issues relating to service provision for cancer patients in hospital and the community.
  • Empathy with patients and carers involved in tertiary treatments and understanding of their special needs.
