Job description
Overview

This role is a 40 hours per week Specialty Registrar level position in a leading Gynaecological Oncology unit. The appointee will support and work with Consultant Gynaecological Oncology Surgeons, Junior Doctors and Senior Medical colleagues, with involvement in tertiary-level surgical care for gynecological cancer patients. The fellow will participate in a multidisciplinary team and contribute to service development, research, and education.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in weekly Specialist Multidisciplinary Team meetings to triage patients for local or specialist surgery.
  • Consult with new and follow-up patients in clinics supervised by Senior Colleagues and supported by a Clinical Nurse Specialist; identify and manage complex pre-operative issues.
  • Share daily ward rounds/pre-operative assessments among Clinical Fellows; participate in theatre sessions and inpatient/outpatient care.
  • Engage in a wide range of surgical training (open and robotic surgery), with opportunities to provide emergency services covering gynecology, colorectal, urology and plastics within the directorate.
  • Attend MDTs and theatres of other Specialities within the Christie, and other non-surgical specialties as applicable.
  • Engage in research and audit within the role and integrate findings into the rota where possible.
  • Support a culture of CPD, professional development and publication activity aligned with GMC and surgical college requirements.
Training and Qualifications
  • MB BS (or equivalent); MRCOG (or equivalent); CRiSP (if not undertaken, expected within 3 months of commencement); AF/CE credentials.
  • GMC registration and evidence of broad publication/research activity; some experience with statistics.
  • General surgical experience with good practical skills; at least 3 years' experience in Gynaecology; experience at specialty registrar level; surgical on-call experience.
  • Desire to participate in research at postgraduate level; ability to audit and critically appraise clinical care delivery by a multidisciplinary team.
  • Interest in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching; interest in teaching non-medical staff.
Role Planning and Workload

The appointee’s professional time will be flexibly deployed across clinical duties, administration, teaching, research and clinical audit. Detailed elements of the job plan will be agreed on appointment. The unit aims to build its research portfolio and continue regional collaboration, publication and presentation.

Organisation Context

The Christie is a leading cancer centre in Manchester, with extensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy services, and a focus on complex abdomino-pelvic malignancy. The role sits within a tertiary pelvic surgery team that collaborates with Colorectal, Urology and Oncoplastic Surgeons.
