Job summary

High Dependency Care continues to evolve as a specialty with exciting opportunities for staff development. The "Getting it Right First Time" critical care review aims to formalize level 2 critical care beds within tertiary and some district general hospitals, adopting a hub and spoke model.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the tertiary HDU team within Critical Care at Alder Hey Children's Hospital. The unit is a busy 15-bed level 2 HDU admitting a broad range of patients, including cardiology, general, and specialty medical and surgical paediatric patients, including post-operative cases. Located adjacent to the 21-bed regional Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), the teams collaborate closely to facilitate patient step-up and step-down processes. The unit admits approximately 650 patients annually, most requiring level 2 critical care interventions.

Main duties of the job

This position is suitable for a post-CCT Paediatrician or a Progress+ Level 2 Paediatric trainee as an OOPE to develop critical care skills applicable to a District General Hospital setting or as part of their High Dependency Care (HDC) SPIN. The successful candidate will work alongside HDU-trained ACPs in a hybrid middle grade rota, collaborating with HDU Consultants to deliver care to some of the most critically ill patients, ranging from general paediatrics to specialty medical and surgical cases. There will be opportunities to engage in clinical governance activities and develop leadership and management skills.

This is a new role as part of the HDU medical team development. The successful candidate will gain valuable level 2 HDU experience and contribute to the development of the HDU Clinical Fellow role. The clinical commitment will be exclusively on HDU, with no obligation to cover the broader hospital's general paediatric rota.
