Job overview

The post holder is responsible for part of the daily operations of the Clinical Embryology laboratory in the Department of Reproductive Medicine. The department offers infertility treatments to the North West Region of England, including IVF, ICSI, donor sperm insemination, cryopreservation, vitrification, and tissue banking. It also provides national and international leadership in clinical and research areas such as tissue cryopreservation and embryo development research. The department is regulated by UK statutory bodies including the HFEA, MHRA, and UKAS. The post involves managing patient care through the laboratory, performing clinical embryology procedures, and ensuring high-quality service delivery.

Main duties of the job
  1. Perform laboratory duties including oocyte retrieval, sperm preparation, fertilization assessment, embryo culture, transfer, cryopreservation, vitrification, thawing, and SSR.
  2. Provide complex advice to medical and nursing staff affecting patient management, including semen, oocyte, and embryo quality, and departmental policies.
  3. Make decisions on laboratory procedures and embryo suitability for treatment, cryopreservation, or disposal.
  4. Participate in weekend and on-call rotas to meet service demands.
  5. Maintain records of patient treatments and perform data analysis for audit, research, and regulatory compliance.
  6. Review documents, conduct quality assessments, and contribute to laboratory quality management.

Registration
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist with HCPC.
  • Full membership of ARCS or equivalent.
  • Diplomate of the Royal College of Pathology or working towards it.
Qualifications
  • BSc in Biological Sciences or related field.
  • Relevant MSc or PhD.
  • ACE training scheme certificate or NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) in cellular science or equivalent.
  • Registration with HFEA as an ICSI practitioner.
Knowledge and experience
