Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Band 7 Clinical/Counselling Psychologist / Psychological Therapist to join our specialist service for people aged 14-35.

The post involves providing specialist psychological assessments and therapies (including cognitive behaviour therapy) primarily for young people at high risk of serious mental health issues (e.g., psychosis) or experiencing first episode psychosis.

Our Early Detection & Intervention Service works with individuals with an At Risk Mental State (ARMS).

The postholder will offer case management and care coordination alongside therapy to clients who are difficult to reach and presenting with social and health complexities.

Main duties of the job
  • Carry out specialist psychological assessments to identify individuals at high risk of developing serious mental health difficulties using CAARMS.
  • Utilise CAARMS supervision structures within the service.
  • Provide psychological assessments based on interpretation of data from various sources, including self-report measures, rating scales, observation, and interviews.
  • Formulate clients’ difficulties and apply psychological theories to clinical practice.
  • Deliver evidence-based psychological therapies (e.g., CBT) for issues like voice hearing, paranoia, depression, and anxiety.
  • Apply cognitive models to clients’ problems in line with therapy goals.
  • Manage an independent caseload and deliver assessments and interventions to individuals, families, and groups, with regular monitoring of caseload data.
  • Offer case management and care coordination for clients at risk of psychosis or in their first episode, with social and health complexities.

Person specification
Education and training
  • Doctoral qualification in Clinical/Counselling Psychology or equivalent, registered as a Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Graduate healthcare qualification in nursing, social work, or allied health, with postgraduate diploma in CBT.
  • Specialist CBT qualification (e.g., PGDip or MSc), with at least 2 years post-qualification experience, BABCP registered.
  • Experience delivering therapy to individuals experiencing psychosis.
Experience
  • Effective multidisciplinary team work.
  • Application of CBT to various mental health issues.
  • High-quality risk assessment and management.
  • Formulation of client problems using psychological models.
  • Managing complex risk and safeguarding.
  • Specialist experience in early psychosis intervention and related therapies.
  • Use of psychosis-specific semi-structured interviews (e.g., PANSS, CAARMS).
Knowledge
  • Evidence-based psychological therapies for anxiety and psychosis risk interventions.
Skills
  • High-level clinical skills in evidence-based interventions.
