Job overview

We are committed to improving early intervention and recovery outcomes for people with severe mental illness through evidence-based community mental health rehabilitation. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical/Counselling/Forensic Psychologist to join our Community Mental Health Rehabilitation Team. We are seeking an innovative and flexible psychologist who is passionate about delivering trauma-informed, person-centred care.

This varied role includes assessment, formulation, individual and group interventions, consultation, and supporting psychological practice across the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will contribute to treatment planning, supervision, and service quality improvement.

• We offer excellent CPD opportunities and ongoing training in therapies including CAT, CBT-P, DBT, EMDR, and FIP.
• We support flexible and hybrid working where service delivery allows. The successful applicant will be required to undertake face-to-face appointments across Cornwall, with opportunities for some home working. Flexible working arrangements will be considered in line with service requirements.
• Candidates relocating to Cornwall from outside the county may be eligible for relocation support, which can be discussed during the recruitment process and is subject to organisational policy.

Main duties of the job

• To maintain an overview of the work of all psychological professionals (e.g., trainee
  psychologists, Clinical Associate Psychologists (CAPs), Psychology Assistants, Mental Health
  Wellbeing practitioners (MHWPs), psychological therapists) working in the community
  mental health team (CMHT) and to be responsible for the systematic governance of
  psychological practice within the team.
• To offer professional support and clinical supervision to psychological professionals (e.g.,
  trainee psychologists, Clinical Associate Psychologists (CAPs), Psychology Assistants, Mental Health Wellbeing practitioners (MHWPs), psychological therapists) as needed/appropriate on a regular basis, in line with the requirements of the British Psychological Society.
• To provide a specialist psychological assessment and therapy service to clients of the Community Mental Health Team, offer advice and consultation on the team’s clients psychological care.
• To contribute to the development of clinical pathways for clients (adults of 18+ years) of the Community Mental Health Service and to collaborate in the planning and implementation of specialist Psychological Assessment and Therapies clinics for this group of clients.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications and Relevant Experience

• Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (as approved by HCPC/BPS) Or Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology (as approved by HCPC/BPS). Or Doctorate in Forensic Psychology / BPS doctoral-level Qualification in Forensic Psychology (Stage 2) (as approved by HCPC/BPS) Or Qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist (Postgraduate doctoral level training in Clinical/Counselling Psychology or its equivalent for those trained before 1996 or outside the UK), as approved by the HCPC; including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
• Registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
• Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice, including training in supervision skills.
• Relevant prior experience of working as a qualified practitioner psychologist in adult mental health or an associated client group where the experience gained is relevant and transferable.
• Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across a range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems and verbal and physical abuse.
• Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care coordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
• Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision.
• Experience of working autonomously within the professional guidelines of the British Psychological Society and the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
• Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.

Skills and Aptitudes

• Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, formulation, clinical interventions, and case management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
• Well-developed skills in effectively communicating, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers, and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
• Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
