Job description

We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic Classroom Assistants to join a vibrant and supportive school community, working with pupils who have a variety of complex needs. If you’re calm under pressure, love working as part of a team, and have a natural ability to build trust with children, this could be the perfect role for you.

The role Classroom Assistants play a key role in supporting primary and secondary aged pupils with a range of additional needs including learning disabilities, communication difficulties, sensory processing challenges, and physical disabilities. You will work closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to deliver highly personalised education and care.

You might spend your morning helping a non-verbal child engage in sensory play, supporting a pupil to use a communication aid to express their feelings, or providing gentle encouragement during a physiotherapy session. In the afternoon, you could be joining a small group for life skills learning, assisting with mobility support, or celebrating a pupil’s progress with their first independent task.

This is a highly rewarding and varied role. You will be actively involved in:

  • Supporting access to learning in a safe and structured environment
  • Promoting social interaction, communication and emotional regulation
  • Delivering sensory and therapeutic activities as guided by specialists
  • Providing personal care with dignity and respect where required
  • Encouraging independence and celebrating small but meaningful progress
  • Helping create a positive, engaging, and inclusive classroom culture

No two days are the same—but every day, you’ll be making a real difference.

The ideal person You’ll be someone who truly cares about children’s wellbeing and growth. Experience in SEND or care settings is helpful, but not essential—we’re looking for people with the right attitude: positive, patient, adaptable, and ready to learn. A relevant qualification (such as in education, childcare, health and social care, or support work) is an advantage but not a requirement.

You will need:

  • A nurturing, empathetic approach
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Confidence to assist with a variety of needs and tasks
  • Willingness to undergo training (e.g. in moving and handling, communication tools, sensory support)
  • Commitment to supporting pupils with respect, consistency, and enthusiasm

The school This welcoming and well-resourced specialist school in Whitehaven is dedicated to supporting pupils with a wide range of additional needs. With small class sizes and a high adult-to-pupil ratio, the school provides a nurturing and therapeutic environment where children are encouraged to develop academically, socially, and emotionally. Staff work collaboratively to ensure that every child is seen, supported, and celebrated.

Hours 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday Full-time and part-time applications welcome

The benefits

  • Comprehensive induction and training
  • Supportive team and positive school culture
  • Long-term opportunities for growth and development
