Job Description:
JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and care of pupils with special educational needs, both in and outside the classroom.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The specific duties will be determined by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.
SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
- Assist the teacher with the support and care of pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs such as dietary, feeding, and toileting.
- Develop an understanding of the individual needs of the pupils supported.
- Assist with authorised programmes (e.g., Education Plan, Care Plan), participate in evaluation, and encourage pupil participation.
- Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under the teacher's guidance.
- Assist with operational and medical/clinical difficulties related to pupils' disabilities.
- Support behavioural management programmes as directed.
- Help pupils move around the school and on transport.
GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
- Assist pupils in learning effectively by managing the learning environment, clarifying instructions, and motivating pupils.
- Promote independence and assist with reinforcement or development areas.
- Help pupils stay on task and meet their physical/medical needs while encouraging independence.
- Maintain confidentiality and establish supportive relationships.
- Prepare resources and supervise activities, including off-site activities following risk assessments.
- Supervise and support pupils during play, cloakroom routines, and medical needs, including administering medicines and dealing with minor injuries.
- Ensure a safe environment and report any concerning signs or symptoms to the teacher.
ADMINISTRATION
- Assist with classroom administration and record-keeping of pupil progress.
- Provide feedback and support materials preparation.
OTHER DUTIES
- Attend training and support work placement students.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the post's level.
