Job Description:
JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and the care of the pupil(s) with special educational needs who are in the teacher’s care, both in and outside the classroom.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The specific duties will be determined by the principal, outreach teacher, or Education Authority officer.
SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
- Assist the teacher with supporting and caring for pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs such as dietary, feeding, and toileting requirements.
- Develop an understanding of the individual needs of the pupils supported.
- Assist with authorized programmes (e.g., Education Plan, Care Plan), participate in evaluating support, and encourage pupil participation.
- Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under the teacher's guidance.
- Assist with operational challenges and non-invasive medical/clinical issues related to pupils’ disabilities.
- Support behavioral management programmes as directed.
- Assist pupils in moving around the school and on transport.
GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
- Help pupils learn effectively in both group and individual settings by managing the learning environment, clarifying instructions, and ensuring the use of equipment and materials.
- Motivate and encourage pupils, reinforce learning, promote independence, and help pupils stay on task.
- Meet physical and medical needs as required while encouraging independence.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding home, pupil, teacher, and school information.
- Build supportive relationships with pupils.
- Prepare resources and materials for support and play sessions.
- Supervise groups or individual pupils during activities, including extracurricular and ICT activities, as directed.
- Assist with off-site activities following risk assessments.
- Supervise routines such as play, cloakroom, handwashing, and toileting, including administering medicines and handling minor injuries.
- Ensure a safe environment and report any concerning signs or symptoms to the teacher.
ADMINISTRATION
- Assist with classroom administrative tasks.
- Help implement systems for recording pupil progress and contribute to maintaining records.
- Provide feedback on pupil progress and assist with preparing materials and resources.
OTHER DUTIES
- Attend in-service training sessions.
- Assist work placement students with practical tasks.
- Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of the role.
