JOB PURPOSE

Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/board officer, assist with the educational support and care of pupils in a designated class or classes, both inside and outside the classroom.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The specific duties will be determined by the principal.

Classroom Support

1. Assist the teacher in the efficient running of the class.
2. Assist pupils to learn effectively in both group and individual settings by managing the learning environment, including:

• Clarifying and explaining instructions
• Ensuring pupils can use equipment and materials provided
• Motivating and encouraging pupils as needed
• Supporting areas such as language, behaviour, reading, spelling, handwriting, and presentation
• Promoting independent learning
• Helping pupils concentrate and complete work

Participate in classroom activities, including curriculum involvement, under the teacher's direction.

Supervise groups or individual children during activities such as listening, library use, ICT, and extracurricular activities.

Supervise play, cloakrooms, and assist with personal care tasks like hand washing and toileting.

Maintain confidentiality regarding home/pupil/teacher/school matters.

Establish supportive relationships with pupils.

Prepare work for pupils as directed by the teacher.

Set up, clean, and maintain equipment.

Prepare materials for play and school activities.

Supervise and support pupils, including administering prescribed medicines and dealing with minor injuries.

Ensure a safe environment for pupils.

Report any signs indicating a child may need expert attention.

Administration

1. Assist with administrative tasks like collecting dinner money and managing lost property.
2. Duplicate materials, assist with creating charts and displays, record media programs, and manage resources.
3. Contribute to maintaining pupil progress records.
4. Provide regular feedback about pupils to the teacher.

Other Duties

1. Attend relevant training sessions.
2. Assist work placement students with tasks.
3. Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or relevant authority within the scope of the role.
