Job Description
The Civil Litigation Solicitor will provide advice on technical areas of law, policy, governance, and organizational functions, specifically relating to housing law and judicial reviews. The role involves conducting litigation and, when appropriate, appearing as an advocate in court, tribunals, hearings, and inquiries. Other responsibilities include supporting the Litigation Team with civil litigation tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support and advise the Housing Directorate regarding litigation, including judicial reviews.
- Attend and advise committees, sub-committees, and panels as instructed by the Director of Governance and Legal, such as Licensing Committee (training provided).
- Provide legal advice to Members, Officers, and related bodies as directed by the Director of Governance and Legal.
- Implement or facilitate the implementation of legal decisions as allocated by the Director or relevant Operational Manager.
- Conduct litigation on behalf of the organization, manage proceedings, and act as advocate before courts, inquiries, hearings, and tribunals, including contested hearings.
- Prepare legal documents and handle statutory or administrative legal tasks.
- Manage disputes and complaints.
- Stay informed of legal developments and advise the organization accordingly.
- Assist in delivering comprehensive legal services and support senior and junior staff on legal issues.
Requirements
- Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a current practising certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Experience and knowledge of housing law and litigation.
- Practical knowledge of public law.
- Willingness and ability to travel to various locations.
- Effective advocacy skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong drafting skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a professional team to resolve complex issues.
- Competent IT skills.
