Job summary

Mott MacDonald Bentley is seeking a Civil Engineer to shape the civil functions from feasibility through to commissioning on UK water and wastewater schemes.

You will prepare and review designs, manage interfaces with other disciplines, and mentor graduates while collaborating with commercial, operational and construction teams to deliver practical, safe solutions.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • Working towards Chartered/Incorporated member of a professional institution (ICE, IMechE, etc).
  • Experience with water or wastewater, non-infrastructure or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience delivering high quality outputs to design, quality, and safety standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Proactive and pragmatic.
  • Proficient in delivering results within short timeframes.
  • Valid driving licence and willingness to travel to sites.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and reviewing designs for schemes and ensuring designs meet legislation and standards.
  • Producing and reviewing technical specifications and procurement schedules; reviewing bids and submissions.
  • Understanding and applying design standards; contributing to client and industry standards.
  • Challenging Client specifications and defending solutions to complex problems.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve delivery processes and implement standard designs, sustainable solutions and digital tools.
  • Acting as technical checker on project documents and conducting technical reviews across teams.
  • Managing interfaces and integration of design with other disciplines and documenting outputs.
  • Seeking input from engineers, specialists, clients and project teams to improve solutions.
  • Collaborating with commercial, operational and construction teams to develop safe, practical designs across stages.
  • Supervising and mentoring Graduates and Engineers to develop their knowledge and skills.
  • Engaging with the client to manage relationships and support project aims.

Job description

You will work on projects that make a real difference to our environment and our communities. Working primarily in the UK water market, MMB provides the feasibility, design, construction, and commissioning services needed to keep water flowing and wastewater treated.

You will play a pivotal role in shaping the civil functions throughout the lifecycle of various projects. From concept design to commissioning, you will ensure that all civil aspects are meticulously considered and integrated.

The role of a Civil Engineer includes:
  • Preparing and reviewing designs for schemes and ensuring all designs are fit for purpose and meet current legislation and standards.
  • Producing and reviewing technical specifications and schedules for procurement activities, reviewing supplier tender bids and technical submissions.
  • Understanding, applying and contributing to design standards with a good knowledge of Client and industry standards.
  • Be able to appropriately challenge Client specifications and present and defend solutions to complex problems.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve delivery processes including development and implementation of standard designs, sustainable solutions, and digital tools.
  • Acting as technical checker on project documents and undertaking technical reviews for projects across teams.
  • Managing the interfaces and integration of the design with that of other disciplines and production of documentation.
  • Able to actively seek input from other engineers, specialists, client and project team members to improve understanding and deliver fit for purpose solutions.
  • Working closely and collaboratively with the commercial, operational and construction teams to develop efficient, practical and safe solutions throughout design stages, construction and beyond.
  • Supervising and mentoring our Graduates and Engineers assisting them to develop their knowledge and skills.
  • Positively engage with the client, managing relationships and adopting a one-team approach to supporting them in achieving their aims.

Degree in Civil Engineering, or related field.

This is a Mott MacDonald Bentley role, employed by Mott MacDonald. Mott MacDonald Bentley is a joint venture business, established in 1999 between civil engineering contractor JN Bentley and global management consultancy, Mott MacDonald.

Mott MacDonald Bentley offers fully integrated design and build services to its clients, combining the contracting expertise of JN Bentley and the design specialisms of Mott MacDonald.

This role is employed by Mott MacDonald but will involve working across the joint venture business, both with Mott MacDonald and JN Bentley colleagues.
