Job description

As a Civil Engineer specialising in roads and drainage, you will play a pivotal role in delivering design projects from feasibility through to completion. You will work closely with directors and senior engineers, contributing to technically challenging and sustainable infrastructure schemes across Scotland.

Key Responsibilities

Lead civil engineering design across projects—particularly road/highway layouts, drainage systems, SUDs, and surface water management.

Produce technical reports, calculations, infrastructure masterplans, and detailed design drawings.

Apply UK standards and guidance such as Sewers for Scotland, Water UK Sewerage Sector Guidance, Designing Streets, Local Authority Design Guidance, and flood risk assessments

Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and local authorities to secure technical approvals, including Road Construction Consent (RCC) where required.

Undertake site visits during construction phases and report observations.

Deliver civil designs that consider hazard and risk reduction.

Mentor and guide more junior engineers as needed.

Uphold the firm’s quality, environmental, and health & safety standards throughout all deliverables.

Required Skills & Experience

Bachelor’s (or Master’s) degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.

Approximately 5–6 years of proven experience in roads/highway design and drainage strategy.

Sound knowledge of UK technical standards and statutory processes relevant to infrastructure delivery.

Strong proficiency with civil design software—such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage / InfoDrainage, and other relevant tools Indeed .

Demonstrated ability in preparing technical reports, infrastructure layouts, masterplans, and contract drawings.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills for liaising with clients, consultants, and statutory bodies.

Familiarity with site inspections and delivering reports from site conditions.

Right to work in the UK.

Desirable Attributes (but not essential)

Working toward Chartered Engineer status (e.g. ICE or IStructE).

A UK driving licence.

Experience with flood risk assessments and surface water management techniques.
