Circulation Assistant / Accessibility Officer, Sunderland Public Library (Sunderland)

Job Title: Circulation Assistant & Accessibility Officer

Hours Worked Per Week: 7 dedicated hours; additional hours available for special programs, meetings, and as coverage for staff absences.

Supervision Received: This position is supervised by the Library Director.

Terms of Employment: This is a grant funded, term position ending on May 30, 2026.

The Circulation Assistant / Accessibility Officer (CA-AO) is responsible for providing clerical service in the areas of circulation support and patron services. Their area of focus in the position is Library Accessibility; ensuring the library is a welcoming, comfortable, and usable environment for all patrons. This staff member, in conjunction with the Library Director, oversees and implements Sensory Friendly Hours at the library, each Thursday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. During the Sensory Friendly Hours, the CA-AO will focus their efforts on direct patron services and maintaining a comfortable environment, while other staff manage the day-to-day operations of the library. The CA-AO will develop and serve on a Library Accessibility Advisory Council, comprised of library patrons and other community members, with the purpose of advising library leadership on how the library can be an accessible and welcoming space for all.

The Circulation Assistant / Accessibility Officer is responsible for the completion of the following tasks:

Circulation:
  1. Staffing the circulation desk.
  2. Checking in and out library materials.
  3. Knowing how to use the Evergreen ILS for all circulation tasks.
  4. Assisting patrons with placing holds and searching the OPAC.
  5. Processing incoming and outgoing holds.
  6. Notifying patrons of available holds.
  7. Printing and processing the pull list of holds, and assigning the completion of pulling the holds to an available volunteer or staff member.
  8. Recording daily patron usage statistics.
  9. Shelving and shelf-reading library materials.
  10. Answering the phone.
  11. Informing patrons of all library services and upcoming events.
  12. Answering basic reference questions both in person and over the phone.
  13. Providing reader advisory services.
  14. Creating new library cards and updating existing patron accounts.
  15. Showing patrons how to use in-house technology such as computers, printers, and photocopiers.
  16. Troubleshooting issues with computer, printer, photocopier and all other in-house technologies.
  17. Collecting and recording copier/fax fees and monetary donations.
  18. Informing patrons of and enforcing library policies.
  19. Handling patron complaints in the absence of the Library Director courteously and then reporting them to the Library Director.
  20. Making recommendations for additions to the collection to staff members with collection development responsibilities.
Accessibility Monitoring:
  1. Evaluating current library facilities, systems, policies, and practices to determine the level of accessibility.
  2. Recommending changes to facilities, systems, policies, and practices to improve accessibility to library leadership.
  3. Keeping up-to-date with developments in accessibility.
  4. Developing relationships with patrons with disabilities, caregivers of people with disabilities, and organizations that support people with disabilities.
  5. Developing and regularly meeting with a Library Accessibility Advisory Council.
  6. Focusing on patron needs during the library’s Sensory Friendly Hours.
Other Duties:
  1. Assisting the Library Director with grant reporting.
  2. Opening the building at the start of the day.
  3. Securing the building at the end of the day.
  4. Light cleaning of computers and shelving areas.
  5. Supervising volunteers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma.
  2. Previous experience providing customer service.
  3. Enjoyment of working with diverse patrons.
  4. Knowledge of accessibility best practices.
  5. Knowledge regarding disabilities.
  6. Ability to supervise volunteers.
  7. Comfort using a variety of technology including computers, printers, and photocopiers.
  8. Willingness to learn new technology.
  9. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and assess priorities in a busy setting.
  10. Ability to maintain composure and treat patrons with kindness in a busy setting.
  11. Enthusiasm, energy, and accuracy in the completion of all tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Previous experience working in libraries.
  2. Previous experience working with people with disabilities.
Physical Demands of Position:
  1. Standing for long periods of time.
  2. Frequent bending, crouching, reaching, climbing, and walking.
  3. Ability to push or pull a book truck weighing up to 75 pounds.
  4. Regularly lifting items weighing up to 20 pounds.
  5. Ability to operate a computer screen for extended periods of time.
