Deputy Manager – Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job:

To assist the manager in achieving the aims and objectives of the Statement of Purpose. To deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager. To support and manage staff to meet the needs of children and young people. To undertake direct work with children and young people as appropriate. To be responsible for managing child protection concerns and complaints. To work in partnership with other professionals to achieve the best outcomes for young people. To offer supervision and support to senior staff in line with National Minimum Standards.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Meet the needs of children by ensuring each young person has an allocated key worker and that staff are aware of each child’s placement plan and responsibilities.
  2. Attend childcare reviews and planning meetings to provide information and achieve the best outcomes.
  3. Undertake direct work with young people and act as an appropriate role model.
  4. Develop systems to involve young people in assessing the quality of care they receive.
  5. Maintain accurate records for monitoring and evaluation.
  6. Work in partnership with parents, carers, and other professionals to safeguard young people.
  7. Chair children’s meetings and facilitate consultations with young people.
  8. Act as an appropriate adult at PACE interviews.
  9. Manage a staff team, including recruitment, supervision, training, and development.
  10. Plan shifts and ensure smooth operation of the home.
  11. Ensure staffing levels meet the needs of the home and manage budgets effectively.
  12. Oversee the maintenance of the home’s fabric and resources.
  13. Develop routines and systems for effective operation and compliance with standards.
  14. Assist in the implementation of the Statement of Purpose and contribute to continuous improvement.
  15. Drive company vehicles as per policies.
  16. Work on a rota basis according to young people's needs.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:
  • Secondary Education with good literacy and numeracy skills
  • NVQ 3 in caring for Children and Young People (or equivalent)
  • Working towards NVQ 4
  • Current driving license
Knowledge & Skills:
  • Knowledge of National Minimum Standards and relevant legislation
  • Team building, supervision, and management skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Understanding of BESD children and challenging behaviour
  • Knowledge of 'Every Child Matters'
  • Organisational and motivational skills
  • Counselling and training skills
  • Drugs Awareness Training
Experience:
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience
  • 12 months experience in a residential setting with challenging behaviour
  • Experience acting as an appropriate adult (PACE)
