Job description

Would you like to come and work in a small and friendly paediatric unit looking after children from our local area? We have 16 beds and dedicated day surgery lists. We are looking for experienced and newly qualified staff nurses to join our team. You would be supported by a team of band 6 nurses, a clinical educator, and ward sisters to aid your development. We also have a clinical educator in post to help with staff development, and we openly encourage change and innovation.

We offer study opportunities to all staff, including Thames Valley and Wessex High Dependency passport days, retrieval study days, and oncology study days. Staff are encouraged to participate in band 5 study days held at the John Radcliffe, as we are part of the CHOX.

The children’s ward at the Horton General Hospital cares for a variety of specialties from medicine to surgery. We care for children from 0 days up to 18 years of age. Every day is different, and we strive to offer the best quality family-centered care. The ward is part of the Children’s Hospital Oxford.

You would have the opportunity to become a link nurse if you have a specialty you are interested in, and we also run a shared decision council that you could participate in.

Please contact the ward at 01295229001 for more information and to arrange an informal visit with Pippa Parnell or Anna Brain, Ward Sister.

You will be expected to look after an allocated group of children and their families, offering a high standard of care. This could include day surgery, medical and trauma inpatients, and medical day care. We also have day ward attenders, which can range from consultant reviews to IV antibiotic administration.

We have access to SD's at the John Radcliffe and as part of the Thames Valley and Wessex network. Staff development is encouraged within the team, and we aim to have team SD's to keep everyone updated alongside mandatory training. Newly qualified staff will be part of the foundation program.

You will be expected to do night shifts, as well as weekends and bank holidays, as we operate a 24/7 ward.

The children’s ward is small but friendly, always striving to deliver the highest care possible while caring for the child and family. We value feedback and act on it when needed. We consider flexible working but must maintain safe staffing levels.

Scope of the role
  • Provide exceptional patient care based on evidence-based practice and OUH values.
  • Work in partnership with patients’ families and friends, actively involving them in the care process.
  • Manage, direct, and evaluate nursing care for a defined caseload.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, carers, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain high standards of nursing care, reflecting professional practice and patient care standards.
  • Develop knowledge of nursing practice relevant to the clinical area.
  • Conduct yourself professionally, serving as a role model, in line with The Code (NMC 2015).
  • Develop skills to provide senior nurse cover in the absence of the Sister or Charge Nurse.
  • Ensure hospital visits meet patient needs and facilitate timely discharges, maintaining effective communication with families and agencies.
Clinical Practice

This job description outlines core requirements for a Band 5 Staff Nurse, aligned with the Trust’s clinical nurse career ladder. Specific requirements related to any specialist practice area will be outlined prior to employment, alongside the clinical skills ladder for development and progression.

Patient Care
  • Promote a patient and family-centered style of clinical practice.
  • Responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care from admission to discharge.
  • Accurately document and report care to team members, multidisciplinary team, and families, communicating changes promptly.
  • Respond to emergencies calmly, maintaining patient safety, and support patients and families as needed.
  • Identify patient needs, plan workloads, and execute care with a problem-solving approach based on person-centered care.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers, and staff.
