Thames & Hudson publishes beautiful books that opens doors onto all aspects of culture. Our list includes titles on art, architecture, design, photography, fashion, music and popular culture, history and archaeology, and a programme of innovative books for children.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced children’s non-fiction book designer with a strong creative vision to work on our award-winning list.

You will collaborate closely with the editorial team and the Children’s Art Director to design and help manage our expanding list of non-fiction, picture, novelty and activity books.

You will enjoy the process of creating outstanding covers and layouts alongside discovering, commissioning and nurturing illustration talent.

Amongst other tasks, you will be:

  • Interpreting briefs and producing creative and effective designs for the target age group
  • Driving projects through all stages of design from initial brief to final print
  • Shaping new development ideas
  • Ensuring artwork is set up flawlessly, with files suitable for co-editions
  • Working closely with the Production team to coordinate reprographic work

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • The ability to transform text supplied by an editor into an appealing visual book layout
  • Confident in communicating ideas within the creative team
  • Proven ability to roughly sketch and plot out ideas prior to commissioning an illustrator
  • Experience discovering and commissioning new and established illustrators
  • A flexible and adaptable approach to feedback
  • Ability to multitask and manage new development leading up to a book fair
  • Solid working experience of the printing process and cover finishes
  • Excellent artworking skills to provide print ready files
  • An awareness of current design trends and approaches in children’s publishing
