Children's Emergency Department Assistant

We are recruiting Children's Emergency Department Assistants to join #TeamIOWNHS. If you are passionate about providing quality and compassionate care, we invite you to work with us to continue our Trust's journey.

The Children's Emergency Department (CED) is expanding into a newly built department for children and young people aged 0-18. The new CED features an audio-visual separate waiting area, 5 bed spaces (including a 2-bedded resus), and a quiet room. While the environment is fast-paced, we support learning opportunities to help you develop your clinical skills. You will encounter a variety of traumatic and medical cases, working closely with paediatric nurses and doctors to deliver holistic care.

Our department sees approximately 13,000 children and young people annually, with presentations ranging from unwell infants to minor injuries and trauma. We are committed to improving our services and maintaining high-quality care. We have been rated Gold in our Quality Assurance Accreditation Scheme audits for three consecutive years.

Job responsibilities

• Assist and support the multidisciplinary team, including Healthcare Assistants and Housekeepers.
• Prepare notes and arrange patient transfers as needed.
• Coordinate with clinical teams for patient discharge and liaise with Patient Transport services.
• Organize patient transfers and communicate task completion or issues to relevant staff.
• Answer calls, greet visitors, and handle inquiries professionally.
• Keep patients and families informed about delays or waiting times, using appropriate communication methods.
• Support safeguarding policies to protect children.
• Assist the ED during high-demand periods as required.

Person Specification

• Key skills: literacy and numeracy
• NVQ Level II or III in Direct Care (or willingness to undertake training within 6 months)
