We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Paediatric Day Ward Nurses to join our team in Stoke-on-Trent. As a Paediatric Day Ward Nurse, you will play a crucial role in providing pre- and post-operative care to children undergoing day surgery and treatments. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes for our young patients

A Paediatric Ward Nurseworking in ENT Day Surgery plays a key role in the pre- andpost-operative care of children undergoing ear, nose, and throat procedures.This includes clinical assessment, emotional support, preparation for surgery,and ensuring a safe discharge. The role demands specialised knowledge ofpaediatric care, ENT conditions, and surgical protocols in a fast-paced daysurgery environment.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality nursing care to children in the day ward.
  • Conduct pre-operative assessments and prepare children for surgery.
  • Monitor and support children during their recovery post-surgery.
  • Administer medications and manage pain relief.
  • Educate and support families with post-operative care instructions.
  • Collaborate with doctors, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive care
  • Pre-operative care:
  • Baseline assessments (vital signs, allergies, fasting status)
  • Preparation of children and families for surgery (education, reassurance)
  • Post-operative care:
  • Airway management and early recovery observation
  • Pain assessment and management using age-appropriate tools.
  • Monitoring for ENT-specific complications (e.g., bleeding, obstruction)
  • Providing safe discharge instructions to families
  • Recognising when escalation or admission is needed.

  • Experience in caring for children with ENT conditions such as
  • Adenoidectomy
  • Nasal or airway surgery
Paediatric and ENT-Specific Knowledge
  • Understanding of ENT surgical procedures, risks, and post-op needs.
  • Familiarity with common ENT conditions and complications in children.
  • Awareness of paediatric-specific issues such as:
  • Developmental stages
  • Communication strategies
  • Fluid and nutrition needs post-anaesthesia
  • Basic knowledge of airway management in paediatrics e.g., obstruction, laryngospasm
Qualifications
  • Professional Qualifications and Registration
  • Registered Nurse Children
  • Completion of a paediatric or surgical nursing course or equivalent clinical training.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development relevant to paediatrics or ENT
  • Post-registration qualification in paediatric ENT, day surgery, or paediatric assessment.
  • Paediatric Immediate Life Support PILS or Advanced Paediatric Life Support APLS.
  • Experience with tonsillectomy post-op protocols, airway emergencies, or recovery nursing
