Overview
This is a key nursing role within Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, based at Chailey Clinical Services. Our nurses deliver specialist nursing care to children and young people who access the Bluebells Short Breaks Service, Chailey Heritage Foundation School or the residential bungalows over 24/7, 52 weeks of the year. The post holder will ensure the health care provided supports a valued lifestyle and independence where possible, delivering up-to-date knowledge and skills for nursing management in line with Trust and national best practice standards.
The post holder will work alongside the Matron, Clinical Specialist Lead Nurse, Team Leader and Clinical Leads to ensure staff deliver specialist nursing care to the children and young people, providing up-to-date knowledge and skills in their specialist area and in nursing management.
Responsibilities
- Deliver evidence-based skilled specialist nursing care according to each child or young person’s health needs.
- Ensure all children and young people receive nursing care that promotes a valued lifestyle and independence, meeting cultural and religious needs.
- Contribute to safe medicines management, providing nursing advice and troubleshooting for staff, including those within the partner organisation Chailey Heritage Foundation.
- Provide education, training and support to non-registered and registered professionals, including student nurses and medical students.
- Work rosters and shift patterns; respond to stressful situations; manage time effectively; re-prioritise as required, with sustained mental effort.
- Deliver direct personal and intimate care to children and young people.
- Work proficiently in varied settings including school classrooms, outdoor areas and swimming pools.
- Demonstrate negotiation skills in managing conflict across a range of situations.
- Support nursing staff in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for children and young people with complex health needs and their families, based on research and good practice.
- Attend and participate in statutory and mandatory training; keep professional registration current with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
- Attend regular clinical supervision and undertake annual Personal Development Plan (PDP).
- Support the clinical supervision and education of team members, including student nurses and medical students, in specialist clinical knowledge and skills.
- Lead and contribute to a specialist area of expertise, participate in peer review and reflective practice within the nursing team at CCS.
- Contribute to whole service delivery of high standards of nursing care and management practice.
- Collaborate with the MDT to ensure safe, high-quality nursing care; update care plans as health needs change.
- Help implement and write clinical policies and standards; adhere to national standards and Trust policies.
- Maintain health records in line with Trust policy; produce accurate written reports as required.
- Participate in report writing for internal and external requirements aligned to the needs of the children and young people and the service.
- Respond to concerns regarding child protection and safeguarding following Trust policies and pan-Sussex procedures.
- Attend health reviews; arrange representation if unavailable; evaluate care effectiveness with the MDT and adjust as appropriate.
- Develop, implement and evaluate guidelines and teaching tools for children, families, healthcare professionals and non-registered professionals.
- Participate in nursing research and audit projects as required; liaise with statutory agencies regarding nursing/health needs.
- Respond to incidents and report appropriately in line with Trust policy.
- Work on other services managed by CCS as required, ensuring safe levels of nursing care.
- Respect the confidentiality of each child or young person and family.
- Develop skills and knowledge in complex fluctuating health needs; maintain required clinical skills for safe nursing care.
- Work with the Team Leader and Clinical Leads, the CCS multidisciplinary team, and external health professionals, including Chailey Heritage Foundation.
- Be the designated specialist link for staff in an identified area of practice (e.g., epilepsy, enteral feeding, bladder and bowel care, respiratory or tissue viability) and lead/planned teaching and assessment of competence for nurses and non-registered professionals; support student supervision.
- Protect, safeguard and promote the well-being of children in line with The Children Act and Working Together to Safeguard Children.

To work within a rota covering 24 hours, 52 weeks a year for the nursing care of children and young people accessing Chailey Heritage Foundation School and its residential bungalows or the Bluebells Short Breaks Service. You may also be required to work in other 24-hour children’s services to support patient safety.
Other Details
To be the designated specialist link for an identified area of practice (epilepsy, enteral feeding, bladder and bowel care, respiratory or tissue viability) and to assume responsibility for planned teaching and competence assessment for nurses and non-registered professionals; support student supervision. Ensure you remain compliant with mandatory training, clinical supervision, PDP, and NMC registration. Maintain safe use of clinical and non-clinical equipment and participate in peer supervision and education sessions. Help develop a specialist area within the nursing team and contribute to governance, policy and safeguarding.
