Job summary

Milk Education is recruiting a Child Development Support Assistant for a welcoming Gateshead primary school from September. You will support children’s social, emotional, behavioral, and academic development in small groups and one-to-one sessions, helping them build confidence and essential life skills.

The role involves working closely with teachers and other staff to create an inclusive learning environment and progress pupils’ learning. Training and ongoing support are provided.

Qualifications

  • Recent experience working with primary-aged children in a school, childcare, or educational setting.
  • Experience supporting children with SEND, SEMH, or additional needs is desirable.
  • A caring, patient, and proactive approach to supporting children's development.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Must live locally to Gateshead or be able to commute daily—no relocation.

Responsibilities

  • Support pupils on a one-to-one basis and in small groups to encourage their academic, social, and emotional development.
  • Deliver targeted interventions that help pupils build confidence, resilience, and independence.
  • Work alongside teachers to adapt learning activities to meet individual needs.
  • Encourage participation and engagement across the curriculum.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Support children in developing emotional regulation, communication, and social skills.
  • Promote positive behaviour and provide consistent encouragement.
  • Help create a safe, nurturing learning environment where every child can succeed.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SEND staff, pastoral teams, and senior leaders.
  • Monitor pupil progress and provide regular feedback to teaching staff.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and school policies at all times.

Pay: £107.71 per day

Child Development Support Assistant - Key Responsibilities
Child Development & Learning
  • Support pupils on a one-to-one basis and in small groups to encourage their academic, social, and emotional development.
