Please note: This position is designed for an entrepreneurial profile with knowledge and experience of scaling deeptech startups.

As the CSO, you will have an entrepreneurial mindset and be responsible for developing and implementing all aspects of the technology that drives this business forward. You will collaborate with the executive team to identify opportunities for innovation, analyze market trends, and ensure that the company's technology aligns with its core objectives. You will lead a team of chemists and engineers to deliver high-quality solutions that meet our portfolio's needs.

Person specifications:

  • PhD in STEM.
  • Over 7 years of experience in fields such as material science, physics, mineralogy, construction, concrete technology, concrete chemistry, civil engineering, CO2 capture, utilization, or recycling technologies.
  • Experience in characterisation, synthesis, and modification of functional materials.
  • Proven leadership of multidisciplinary R&D teams for over 7 years, including hiring, coaching, and performance management.
  • Excellent project management skills with a successful track record of delivering R&D projects on time and within budget.
  • Extensive experience in independent research, designing, and conducting studies on fundamental scientific questions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functions and build effective stakeholder relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues, propose innovative solutions, and adapt protocols as needed.
  • Deep understanding of characterisation methodologies for complex organic and inorganic materials, including polymers and solid adsorbents.
  • R&D experience in adsorption, adsorbent design, separation technologies, catalysts, surface functionalisation, carbon capture, surface chemistry, or polymers.
  • Knowledge of laboratory setup, HSE requirements, equipment specification, and procurement.
  • Understanding of funding mechanisms, grant applications, and R&D collaboration opportunities.
  • Experience with intellectual property management, patent filings, and licensing.
  • Experience in deep tech startups is highly desirable.
  • Experience as a C-suite executive or founder at a VC-backed startup is highly desirable.
