Company: 9N Technologies

Part-time / remote role.

Position Overview:

9N Technologies, a pioneering deep-tech startup, is redefining materials science by developing next-generation semiconductor devices powered by graphene. Our mission is to create intelligent, AI-enhanced materials that transform industries, from biotechnology to aerospace.

We are seeking a visionary Chief Science Officer (CSO) to lead our graphene semiconductor research and development efforts. This strategic leadership role requires deep expertise in nanoelectronics, 2D materials, and semiconductor physics. As CSO, you will define and drive the company’s scientific direction, leading breakthrough innovations in graphene-based transistors and circuit elements. This equity-based role offers the opportunity to join a cutting-edge technology venture, with a competitive salary upon securing seed funding.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Scientific Leadership & Strategy
    • Define and execute the technical roadmap for graphene semiconductor development at 9N Technologies.
    • Align research efforts with industry trends, patent landscapes, and commercialization opportunities.
    • Establish and oversee a high-impact R&D strategy for graphene-based electronics and AI-enhanced materials.
    • Provide technical mentorship to cross-disciplinary teams in IC design, materials science, and fabrication.
  2. Graphene-Based Semiconductor Innovation
    • Oversee the development and optimization of graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) for high-speed and low-power applications.
    • Spearhead novel bandgap engineering strategies, including doping, heterostructures, and strain engineering.
    • Direct research into carrier transport models and quantum transport phenomena in graphene and 2D materials.
  3. Advanced Nanoscale Fabrication & Integration
    • Lead efforts to adapt CMOS-compatible fabrication techniques for graphene devices.
    • Drive innovation in scalable deposition, etching, and patterning methods for integrating graphene into semiconductor manufacturing.
    • Optimize electrode contacts, dielectric interfaces, and encapsulation techniques to enhance graphene device performance.
    • Oversee multi-physics simulation models using TCAD, COMSOL, Sentaurus, and Quantum Espresso.
    • Integrate AI-driven predictive modeling for material performance and device optimization.
    • Collaborate with IC designers to translate theoretical models into scalable circuit applications.
  4. Research Partnerships & Thought Leadership
    • Foster collaborations with leading universities, research institutions, and industry partners.
    • Secure research grants and funding to support R&D initiatives.
    • Publish groundbreaking research in top-tier journals and conferences to establish 9N Technologies as a global leader in graphene electronics.

Qualifications:

  • Education: PhD or Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nanotechnology, or Materials Science with a focus on 2D materials.
  • Experience: Proven leadership in graphene electronics, nano-device fabrication, and semiconductor physics. Strong background in electronic transport, band structure engineering, and quantum mechanics. Hands-on expertise with fabrication techniques (CVD growth, lithography, etching, doping, etc.). Experience collaborating with IC designers and semiconductor process engineers. Prior work in emerging transistor technologies (e.g., GFETs, TFETs, spintronics, neuromorphic computing) is highly desirable.
  • Skills: Expertise in TCAD, COMSOL, Sentaurus, Quantum Espresso, or similar simulation tools. Deep understanding of graphene heterostructures, hBN dielectrics, and 2D material stacking. Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills for both fundamental research and commercial applications. Demonstrated ability to publish high-impact research and secure intellectual property through patents.

Compensation & Equity:

This is an equity-based role, ideal for a visionary scientist who wants to lead the development of the world’s first commercially viable graphene semiconductor devices. A competitive salary will be offered upon securing seed funding.
