Job description

Chief Respiratory and Sleep Clinical Physiologist / Clinical Scientist

To work as part of the multi-disciplinary respiratory medicine team to provide and develop a comprehensive and efficient service of the highest quality. The job role will be split between respiratory and sleep/CPAP specialisms, with the time allocation at each specialism to be determined.

From a respiratory perspective, you will oversee the delivery of the full range of pulmonary function diagnostics (including cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, oxygen assessments, and bronchial challenge testing). This includes presenting and checking results, writing reports, and clinical interpretation of the results.

From a sleep/CPAP perspective, you will support the management of sleep diagnostics and CPAP delivery by overseeing investigations (such as respiratory polygraphy), analyzing results, and initiating and monitoring therapeutic interventions (such as CPAP). You may also perform these tasks to cover staff leave or during high activity periods.

You will supervise and train students and other healthcare staff, providing support and training in respiratory and sleep diagnostics. Developing service protocols towards IQIPS accreditation within 3-5 years is also a key goal.

Respiratory & Sleep Investigations
  • Perform and interpret respiratory polygraphy, sleep studies, and overnight oximetry studies, including triaging referrals and taking clinical history.
  • Recommend treatment options, including initiating and monitoring CPAP therapy.
  • Perform lung function investigations (Spirometry, Full PFTs, Whole Body Plethysmography, Methacholine Challenge, Exercise Tests, etc.) and interpret results.
  • Oversee Physiologist-Led ILD clinics.
  • Ensure results are accurate and reports are clear, adhering to guidelines on safety and infection control.
  • Manage equipment maintenance, calibration, quality assurance, and infection control.
Administrative and Professional Duties
  • Manage stock, appointments, and resource allocation.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical practice, including CPD and registration.
  • Participate in departmental audits, research, and publications.
Teaching & Training
  • Provide education to healthcare professionals and students.
  • Deliver training on spirometry and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Present at departmental meetings.
Departmental Responsibilities
  • Lead service development initiatives.
  • Review and develop departmental protocols and guidelines.
  • Assist with administrative duties and departmental record-keeping.
